Best automatic hatchback cars in India for Rs 8 lakh

1. Maruti Suzuki Swift    8/10

A 5-speed AMT brings the much wanted convenience of an automatic to the Maruti Suzuki Swift. The gearbox isn’t the smoothest around but for average city use, it works well enough. What will also make owners more forgiving of the AMT’s traits is the car’s excellent fuel economy. There’s no top-spec variant of the Swift auto as yet, but all said, this is the best automatic car for under Rs 8 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki Swift automatic prices:
1.2 K12 VXI AMT                                          Rs 6.34 lakh
1.2 K12 ZXI AMT                                          Rs 6.96 lakh

2. Hyundai Grand i10     8/10

The well-rounded Hyundai Grand i10 is a great city car to begin with. A four-speed automatic makes the already-likeable Hyundai even more user-friendly. Updates last year brought with it improvements to the ride quality, as well as more features including a touchscreen infotainment system making the small Hyundai more complete than before. What marks the Grand i10 auto down is its average fuel economy.

Hyundai Grand i10 automatic prices:
1.2 Kappa Dual VTVT 4-Speed Automatic Magna                  Rs 6.28 lakh
1.2 Kappa Dual VTVT 4-Speed Automatic Sportz(O)              Rs 6.94 lakh

3. Maruti Ignis     8/10

The distinctly-styled Maruti Suzuki Ignis automatic is a peppy urban runabout. The Maruti Ignis’ design may not be to all tastes and its automated manual transmission (AMT) isn’t the most sophisticated of systems either. However, the gearbox is in tune with the peppy 1.2 petrol engine and that makes the Ignis a friendly city car. Efficiency is good as well.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis automatic prices:
Delta (Automatic) Petrol                                  Rs 5.82 lakh
Zeta (Automatic) Petrol                                   Rs 6.26 lakh
Alpha (Automatic) Petrol                                 Rs 7.05 lakh

4. Honda Brio     7/10

Small and easy to drive, the Honda Brio has always been a great city car. And with the five-speed automatic gearbox, it’s even more suited to the urban grind. 2017’s facelift helped enhance the little Honda’s cabin manifold but there’s no denying the Brio has started to show its age. You can get a good deal on one though.

Honda Brio automatic prices:
VX AT Petrol                                                    Rs 6.82 lakh

5. Ford Figo     7/10

The Ford Figo automatic stands out for its class-leading power output of 112hp from its 1.5-litre petrol engine, and it is also the only one to use a dual-clutch gearbox. Unfortunately, the six-speed gearbox isn’t as smooth as it ought to be. The high list price is another downer but you can push for a big discount. Note, the updated Figo automatic with a new engine-gearbox combo comes in November 2018.

Ford Figo automatic prices:
Titanium 1.5 Ti-VCT AT                                    Rs 8.15 lakh

Prices are ex-showroom, Delhi as on June 28, 2018.
