Hyundai Verna facelift to get all-new 1.5 diesel and petrol engines

Launched recently in August 2017, the Hyundai Verna is in the early stages of its life cycle and isn’t due for a mid-life facelift for the next couple of years. But, given the long lead time needed for product development in the auto industry, Hyundai has already begun work on the refreshed Verna, which is slated for launch in the second half of 2020.

The updated Verna will have more than the usual change of soft parts like bumpers, grilles, typical of most facelifts, and will come with extensive sheet metal changes which, according to company sources, “will make it look like an all-new car.” A new bonnet, new fenders and possibly a new boot lid are some the changes expected, and the interiors too will be revamped with fresh instrumentation and the next-gen infotainment system that incorporates advanced telematics.

“Connectivity is of growing importance and our next area of focus will be telematics,” said a company source. The next generation of telematics, which the Verna facelift will eventually use, will make its debut in the Hyundai compact SUV (Codename: QXI) that goes on sale in the first half of 2019.

The big news, however, is under the hood, where the 1.6-litre diesel engine will be replaced with an all-new 1.5 diesel which will comply with the new BS-VI emission norms that'll come into effect on April 1, 2020. This new engine, apart from being cleaner, is expected to be more refined and fuel-efficient but could be down on power. It is reliably learned that to meet the more stringent emission norms, the max power output has gone from 128hp to 115hp, while torque too is down from 260Nm to 250Nm.

An all-new 1.5 petrol motor is on the cards too, and it will eventually replace the current 1.6 unit, but we have no details on the power and torque outputs. What is for certain, however, is that the new petrol motor will be packaged to take a 48V hybrid system to be future-ready for 2023 and beyond when the emission norms are likely to get even tighter.

The all-new 1.5 petrol and diesel motors will first make their debut in 2019 and most likely in the production version of the Kia SP Concept SUV that is due to go on sale in the first half of 2019. However, the Kia engines won’t be BS-VI compliant at launch.

MG Motor India beefs up senior management team

EXCLUSIVE!

MG Motor India is putting together a team of experienced top management executives as it prepares to break into the Indian automotive market next year. The carmaker is all set to bring on board Gaurav Gupta, currently the head of Bridgestone Indonesia and a GM veteran, as the director of sales, service and marketing at MG Motor India.

In his tenure of 20 years at GM, Gupta has held various positions in retail, marketing and product planning in India, China, Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia. In fact, he was the president director at GM Indonesia for two years from August 2015 and prior to that, the managing director of General Motors Vietnam for four years from June 2011.

MG Motor India is beefing up its top management team by diligently scouting across the automotive spectrum for talent. The fact that nearly all the senior executives have an automotive background will provide the company with the necessary expertise and experience to advance quickly in the competitive Indian automotive industry. Competition is further set to intensify as two new players – Kia Motors and PSA Group – are also gearing up to enter India.

MG Motor India has recently appointed Rakesh Sidana as national sales head. Sidana was earlier AVP and operating head (Marketing & Strategy) at Honda Cars India.

Other senior level appointments from India Auto Inc include Pankaj Parkar, who has joined the company as head of dealer development in July 2017 from Audi India, where he was the sales chief.  Around the same time, the carmaker also appointed Pallavi Singh as its head of marketing. Before joining MG Motor India, Singh led the marketing operations for Harley-Davidson in India.

Another senior level appointment in the works is that of Rajesh Mehrotra, who is expected to join as the head of aftersales at MG Motor India. Mehrotra has held senior positions in customer service operations and aftersales at Toyota Kirloskar and Hyundai India in the past.

These recent appointments to tap top talent clearly point that MG Motor India is hunting across the spectrum to put together an entire team in place before their first product, an SUV, is launched by the first half of 2019.

Hyundai Creta facelift gets over 32,000 bookings

The Creta has been a blockbuster SUV for Hyundai right from its launch in 2015. The company gave the model a mid-life refresh in May this year, and the Creta has been scaling new heights ever since. According to Hyundai dealers, the facelifted SUV has recorded more than 32,000 bookings in just two months.

Apart from minor styling tweaks, the Creta gets the addition of many features, some of which are much sought after these days, like a sunroof. It also gets a powered driver’s seat and wireless phone charging in the top variant. With the update, it’s the E+ (one level above base) trim that’s become the bestselling variant. The E+ gets the option of a 1.6-litre petrol and a 1.4-litre diesel engine, and features like electrically adjustable wing mirrors, a 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, steering-mounted controls and a 12V power outlet, depending on the engine option. The Creta E+ is priced at Rs 11.63 lakh for the petrol and Rs 11.75 lakh for the diesel (ex-showroom, Delhi). The more powerful 1.6-litre diesel hasn’t been offered on this trim.

The company has witnessed a surge in demand for petrol variants of the Creta in the last few months – contributing as much as 32 percent to the bookings. As far as sales numbers go, Hyundai managed to sell 11,111 units of the SUV in June 2018, out of which the petrol-engined model sold 3,583 units and the diesel sales were at 7,528 units.

Skoda Karoq Scout SUV revealed ahead of Paris debut

Skoda has released a first set of images and details of its upcoming Karoq Scout SUV, which will see a public debut at the upcoming Paris Motor show 2018.

The Karoq Scout gets four-wheel drive as standard. In line with other Scout models (like the Kodiaq Scout sold abroad), the car will also get a hardy styling and additional equipment over the standard car.

The SUV will have three engine options on offer — a 150hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 2.0-litre diesel motor that puts out either 150hp or 190hp. The lower-powered diesel mill is the only one which will have a manual gearbox as an option.

On the outside, the Karoq Scout is marked out by a metallic rear bumper, scuff plates and sump guard. The model gets 18-inch wheels as standard, with 19-inch alloy wheels an option, in addition to exclusive badging and tinted windows.

The interior also has an exclusive touch; the seat upholstery gets bespoke Scout badging and brown highlights to illustrate that it's a more all-terrain variant. It features the Virtual Cockpit digital dials set-up as standard, as well as in-car Wi-Fi.

Skoda is expected to bring the standard Karoq SUV to India sometime next year. Read our review of the 2018 Skoda Karoq here.

Mahindra to raise prices from August

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has announced that it will increase prices of its passenger vehicles by up to Rs 30,000 or 2 percent, effective August 2018.

Commenting on the price hike, Rajan Wadhera, president (Automotive Sector), Mahindra & Mahindra, said, “With the ongoing increase in commodity prices we plan to take a price hike of up to 2 percent in some models.”

As per apex industry body SIAM’s quarterly review, commodity prices have been seeing an upward trend with key raw materials, including HR steel (+3.20 percent), CR steel (+3.97 percent), pig iron (+3.41 percent) and virgin aluminium (+9.26 percent) escalating significantly between March and May 2018, all of which will impact production costs of manufacturers.

The news of the price increase comes a day before Mahindra’s name announcement for its upcoming MPV (codename: U321). The MPV that is expected to go on sale in the coming months is one of the big launches from Mahindra this year. The MPV will come in both, seven- and eight-seat configurations, and going by Mahindra’s recent trend, expect it to be loaded with upmarket comfort and connectivity features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, automatic climate control, projector headlamps and daytime running lamps.

The U321 won't be a replacement for the Xylo, but instead is a slightly premium product that will be positioned above it. It will take on the upcoming second-gen Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, the Renault Lodgy, and even the Toyota Innova Crysta at the higher end of the segment.

U321 MPV officially named Mahindra Marazzo

Known as the U321 to most for the longest time, Mahindra's upcoming MPV finally has its official name - it's called the Marazzo. The Marazzo name has been derived from a word in the Spanish language of Basque, which translates to ‘shark’ in English.

The Marazzo is the first passenger car to be developed at Mahindra’s North American Technical Centre, and has been co-designed by Pininfarina and Mahindra’s Kandivali design studio, in Mumbai. Ananthan Ramkripa, Chief Designer at Mahindra, says the design of the Marazzo is inspired by a shark, with several elements – inside and out – styled to mimic certain aspects of a shark.  Mahindra has previously confirmed the MPV will be manufactured at its production facility, in Nashik, and is based on a new platform.

The Marazzo MPV will be offered in seven- and eight-seat configurations, and in line with other Mahindras, expect the Marazzo to be packed with creature comforts and equipment such as Mahindra's latest infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, steering-mounted audio controls, automatic climate control with vents for all three rows, projector headlamps, daytime running lights and more.

The Marazzo will debut Mahindra’s new 1.5-litre diesel engine, likely to produce around 121hp and 300Nm, which will be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. Going forward, Mahindra could also look at offering an automatic transmission on the Marazzo.

Mahindra says the Marazzo does not replace any of its existing products, and is not a successor to the Xylo, but is instead a premium product positioned slightly above it. Size-wise, the Marazzo will slot in between the upcoming second-generation Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Toyota Innova Crysta, but will be closer to the former in terms of price, and is expected to be launched in the coming months.

Suzuki Vitara SUV facelift unveiled

Suzuki has taken the wraps off its refreshed Vitara SUV for the international market. The facelift model is likely to be named the Vitara Series II in a few markets, like Australia.

The new Suzuki Vitara is now fitted with two new turbo-petrol drivetrains, with 1.0-litre and 1.4-litre displacements. These engines replace the 1.6-litre petrol mill that powered the old, pre-facelift model.

The Suzuki Vitara facelift with the 1.0-litre petrol engine churns out 110hp; meanwhile, the 1.4-litre petrol powertrain delivers 140hp.

There will be no diesel engine option available on the updated Vitara, globally.

In addition to this revised engine line-up, the Vitara facelift gets a subtle refresh in exterior styling as compared to its predecessor – with revised light clusters, grille and bumper at the front, as well as more intricate tail-lights at the rear.

Inside, higher-quality materials have been used on the dashboard, while a colour screen is now fitted to the redesigned instrument cluster.

The car's safety equipment has been given a boost, as well. The higher trim now gets standard automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and assistance, traffic-sign recognition, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Suzuki Vitara is the company’s flagship SUV and has also been spotted in India more than once undergoing tests (not to be confused with the Vitara Brezza compact SUV sold in India). The Suzuki Vitara SUV, if launched here, can be a direct rival to the Hyundai Creta and the Mahindra XUV500 in the Indian market.

SCOOP! Tata Harrier to use Hyundai automatic gearbox

That the Tata Harrier SUV - scheduled to go on sale in January 2019 - will use a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine is common knowledge now. What is an interesting development, however, is Tata Motors’ choice of automatic gearbox for the diesel variant of the Harrier. The SUV won’t use Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ 9-speed automatic gearbox (as was widely expected) but will instead get a 6-speed auto from Hyundai.

It is understood that the FCA 9-speed auto was proving too expensive for the Harrier project, which has been developed to meet strict cost targets. Notably, FCA’s 9-speed gearbox will make its India debut on the Jeep Compass Trailhawk, towards the end of 2018. Sources tell us Tata Motors has found a good (and cost-effective) match for the 2.0-litre engine in Korean carmaker Hyundai’s 6-speed torque converter automatic.

“The Hyundai transmission is well suited to the power and torque characteristics of the 2.0-litre Fiat diesel, and is significantly cheaper than the FCA transmission, so it made more sense for us to use it” said a Tata Motors source. This 6-speed automatic presently does duty on the Tucson and a number of other models in Hyundai’s portfolio.

The 6-speed auto will be offered on the five-seat, 140hp Harrier, as well as on its as-yet unnamed, seven-seat, 170hp sibling that will go on sale at a later date. Both SUVs will be offered with Tata’s all-wheel drive system, too.

Tata Motors’ decision to give due priority to an automatic transmission option on the Harrier is in line with the steady rise in demand for automatics in India. Interestingly, in the past, demand for the automatic variant of the Hexa exceeded Tata Motors’ internal projections.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz facelift launch on August 20, 2018

The Maruti Ciaz facelift will finally hit Nexa showrooms on August 20, 2018. The refreshed Ciaz was initially expected to see a market launch on August 6, but Maruti had to push the launch event due to another event clashing with the date. A few Nexa dealers have already started taking bookings for the car unofficially, for amounts between Rs 11,000 and Rs 25,000.

In terms of design, the 2018 Ciaz facelift gets a more rounded nose and a smoother grille that merges with the headlights. It gets subtle chrome accents on the grille and larger ones around the new bumper. A welcome upgrade on the Ciaz facelift is the switch to LED headlamps embellished with LED daytime running lights. At the back, except for new inserts for the LED tail-lamps and chrome detailing on the rear bumper, the overall styling remains the same.

On the inside, as reported by us earlier, the car gets a new instrument cluster and multi-info display, a lighter shade for the faux wood trim, an updated infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and new upholstery for the seats and door pads.

Powering the Ciaz facelift will be Suzuki’s new 1.5-litre petrol motor that will replace the current 1.4 petrol. Maruti will also offer this engine on the second-generation Ertiga that'll come to the market later this year. While the engine’s 104hp of power is average by sedan class standards, the 1.5-litre petrol unit will stand out for its SHVS mild-hybrid tech.

The prices for the updated Ciaz are not yet out, but we can tell you that there are good deals currently available on unsold stock of the outgoing, pre-facelift Ciaz. Depending on the location, Nexa dealers are offering discounts ranging from Rs 75,000 to Rs 1.3 lakh on the car.

The Maruti Ciaz takes on the likes of the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the Toyota Yaris.

Review: 2018 Skoda Karoq review, test drive

Like the mythical primate it was named after, the Skoda Yeti was a rare and rather unique SUV that captivated owners with its very distinctive and unusual character. But what really earned it a fiercely loyal tribe of followers was the way it drove. Not since the Chevrolet (née Subaru) Forester have we seen an SUV that was an out and out driver’s car. No other SUV has come close to being as satisfying to drive as the Yeti, no matter how good or bad the road surface was. But no matter how brilliant and involving the Yeti was to drive, it was always as rare as...well, a Yeti. There were hardly any takers for it and in the seven years it was on sale in India, Skoda managed to sell under 5,000 Yetis. The problem was that the quirky design – which had hatchback dimensions, a small cabin, an even smaller boot and an upright van-like rear – wasn’t SUV enough for the typical SUV buyer, and not just in India but elsewhere in the world too. So when it was time to replace the Yeti, Skoda took a more conventional approach for its successor – the Karoq.

CONSERVATIVE PARTY

Though bigger in every dimension, the Karoq is far from being a grown-up Yeti, and is more of a scaled-down Kodiaq. That’s a good and bad thing; depending on which faction you belong to. Loyalists will be dismayed to see that the chunky, oddball design, which gave the Yeti its personality, is gone, and, instead, you get a more conventional shape that is more in line with Skoda’s new SUV design language pioneered by the Kodiaq. That’s a good thing for the broader swathe of buyers who will surely appreciate the well-proportioned and sharply cut lines of the Karoq.

In fact, when viewed head-on, it’s hard to distinguish the Karoq from the bigger Kodiaq. The Karoq uses the same design cues as its elder sibling, like the dual-slat grille with the indentation below the Skoda logo, the slim headlights with tiny fog lamps stacked below it and the full-width air intake in the lower bumper. It’s when you look closely that you can see the difference in the details. And design details are what the Karoq abounds with. Skoda has used the VW Group’s expertise of producing body panels with sharply drawn creases to the full. The ‘pinched’ shoulder line, chiselled wheel arches and superbly sculpted tailgate, with a unique looking tail-light design, give the Karoq lots of character. It’s nowhere near as distinctive as the Yeti but is a handsome SUV all the same, and that is sure to find almost universal appeal. And those 19-inch Crater wheels look just stunning.

Based on the VW Group’s universal MQB platform that underpins a wide range of models, the Karoq benefits from the same mechanicals used in other compact SUVs from the Group. It gets MacPherson struts up front and a four-link rear axle (for the four-wheel-drive variant), while front-wheel-drive models get a basic torsion bar setup at the rear. The Karoq also gets the competent Haldex 4x4 system from the Kodiaq and other Group SUVs, but with a longer wheelbase and greater overhangs than the Yeti; we wonder if it will be as Yeti-like off-road. However, SUV buyers don’t buy SUVs for off-road prowess and the most popular version of the Karoq is likely to be the basic front-wheel-drive version with a DSG automatic gearbox.

Practicality is what owners will certainly want and the Karoq, in true Skoda tradition, has tons of it. You get a large glovebox and lots of generous cubbyholes that can swallow one-litre bottles and other bits and bobs.

The upright seats are the highlight of the cabin. Not only do they give you an elevated view of the road but the high ‘hip-point’ and superb underthigh support makes the Karoq a hugely comfortable place to spend long hours in. Legroom isn’t as generous as the bigger Kodiaq’s, naturally, and two six-footers sitting one behind the other could experience a shortage of knee room, but, with Skoda’s VarioFlex seating system – the same we saw on the Yeti – it’s not an issue. This cleverly designed seating arrangement allows you to slide, recline and even remove each rear seat unit individually. This not only optimises passenger room but frees up luggage space too, which, by the way, is a generous 521 litres with all seats in place. Other clever bits include handy hooks in the boot area to tie down luggage, a sealed trash bin in the driver’s door pocket, rear-facing tablet holders that clip on to the front headrests, a flip-up tray for the rear passenger, and, oh yes, no Skoda is complete without an umbrella which stows neatly under the rear seat.

Top-end variants are expected to be fully loaded and should come with a massive 9.2-inch touchscreen, LED ambient lighting, a 12-speaker audio system, wireless charging for smartphones, a powered tailgate and a huge panoramic sunroof, along with a host of other equipment. The dashboard design is again very Skoda-like, with a mix of strong horizontal and vertical elements and a logical layout for all the controls. All the materials used are top notch and the cabin exudes the same sense of quality you experience in premium Skodas like the Kodiaq and Superb.

PRACTICAL THEORY

The Karoq we tested came the familiar 2.0 TDI diesel engine which develops 150hp and a healthy 340m of torque. It was also equipped with the same six-speed manual we know so well from the Yeti, but, sadly (for enthusiasts), the India-spec car will only get DSG automatic transmission. The truth is that, one of the reasons the Yeti failed in India is because it was never offered with an automatic option, and Skoda doesn’t want to make that mistake again.

Lighter than the Kodiaq by a good 313kg and paired to a manual transmission, the Karoq felt far more sprightly than its seven-seat sibling from the get go. Like most VW Group diesels, this latest TDI motor is extremely responsive, with a strong wave of torque building up from low down in the rev range. There’s a bit of turbo lag initially but it quickly disappears once the tacho needle sweeps past 1,500rpm. The mid-range is particularly punchy, which gives the Karoq great overtaking capability. Once you’re in the meat of the powerband, a slight flex of the foot whisks you forward with ease. It’s when you push north of 4,000rpm that you face some resistance. Power tails off rapidly beyond this point and the engine sounds pretty harsh. In fact, you can hear the distinct diesel drone at high revs, and in the interest of low noise levels, it’s best to keep the engine below the 3,500rpm mark.

The Karoq doesn’t have the agility of the Yeti and is more benign rather than entertaining in the way it handles. The steering is light and fairly accurate but a bit numb when it comes to feel. Engaging Sport mode only makes it heavier and doesn’t improve the steering response. The hefty diesel makes the Karoq a nose-heavy car with a tendency to understeer when pushed hard. Overall, however, it’s a passive and safe SUV to punt around and the tyres offer superb grip.

Riding on 19-inch wheels and 225/45 low-profile tyres, the Karoq’s ride feels a bit brittle over sharp edges. For India, however, we are sure the Karoq will be equipped with 17- or 18- inchers in the interest of ride comfort. On smoother surfaces, the SUV rides superbly, soaking up undulations with a flat poise so as not to disturb its occupants. There’s a satisfying solidity to the way it absorbs dips and bumps, and the suspension too works silently.

The plush and premium Karoq has an underlying tough-as-nails side to it, which makes it desirable and practical at the same time. But the key question that remains unanswered is price. Indications suggest that it won’t be cheap when it goes on sale in the first-half of 2019, but will certainly be priced lower than the Kodiaq. If you don’t need the extra row of seats, the Karoq, in fact, offers almost everything the Kodiaq does at a significantly lower cost.

Bugatti Divo previewed ahead of August 24 reveal

Bugatti has shown the first glimpse of its Chiron-based Divo hypercar ahead of its launch on August 24. Following the brand's confirmation that a track-focused named Divo is on the way, shots of the car's tail-lights and the outline of a large fixed wing were revealed in a social media video.

A couple of weeks ago, the company teased an image of the embroidered branding on the car. While this didn't point towards any performance-boosting revisions over the Chiron, the hashtag ‘Built for corners’ suggested a setup more suited to track driving than outright speed. Bugatti also lauded the car's "enormous downforce and G-forces".

The hypercar gets its name from the 1928 and 1929 Targa Florio-winning, French Bugatti race driver Albert Divo.

Bugatti hasn't revealed the car yet but has confirmed that the Divo will be the first project undertaken by the company's newly resurrected coachbuilding division. It will look notably distinct from the regular Chiron thanks to the "new, strong design language".

Set to be revealed at The Quail Motorsports Gathering later, the Divo will add to the series of editions that starts with the standard £2.5 million Chiron, up to the more lightweight, hardcore Chiron Sport.

The Divo is expected to get Bugatti's 1,500hp, 8.0-litre, W16 quad-turbo engine, but lightweighting measures, downforce-boosting bodywork, upgraded suspension and other corner-friendly mechanical tweaks are confirmed.

It’s likely that the hypercar will complete the brand's line-up for the foreseeable future, given that it will be the third variant launched in two years. Bugatti will charge £4.42 million for each of the 40 Divos that will be made – a heavy premium over the other two models.

Last year, the carmaker set the record for the 0-400kph-0 run with a time of 41.96sec, but Koenigsegg broke this record twice a few weeks later. Koenigsegg also broke the production car speed record, which has remained unchallenged by Bugatti.

Bugatti hasn’t hinted at any motorsport intentions with the Divo, except for the location of its unveiling, but it is likely to be a contender for the production car Nürburgring lap record.

To set the record, it would have to beat the Nio EP9’s time of 6:45.90. And if successful, it would make three of the five fastest production car laps from the Volkswagen Group products, joining the current second-place holder, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, and fourth-place Lamborghini Huracán Performante.

Porsche also recently smashed the outright 'Ring record with its modified Le Mans car, the 919 Evo.

SCOOP! Hyundai considering micro SUV to rival Renault Kwid

Hyundai is evaluating a micro SUV for India, Y.K. Koo, managing director and CEO, Hyundai Motor India has disclosed to Autocar India. The model in question will be positioned under Hyundai’s upcoming Carlino concept-based sub-4m SUV (code: QXI).

"Maybe later, we can introduce a micro SUV that is smaller than the QXI. This would enable us to have a strong SUV line-up comprising of the micro SUV, the sub-4 metre QXI and the Creta and then maybe the Tucson," Koo told Autocar India in an interview.

Hyundai is conducting surveys and studies to ascertain the possible market for the micro SUV, which is not part of its plan to launch eight new products in India by 2020. The new model is said to be a good three-four years away from production, subject to the project getting a green light. Also, a mass volume product like an affordable micro SUV will require additional production capacity as the current plant is running beyond its installed capacity of 700,000 units a year on a three-shift basis. Additional capacity is unlikely to be added before 2020.

Sources at Hyundai hint the carmaker's decision to go ahead with the micro SUV could be based on the response to Maruti Suzuki's own micro SUV - the production version of the Future-S Concept from Auto Expo 2018. Currently under development, this new body style from Maruti (codename: Y1K) will launch in 2020. Rivals for the potential micro SUV from Hyundai will also include the Renault Kwid that can be credited with pioneering the SUV-inspired look in the small car space.

Hyundai has met with tremendous success in the mass market SUV space, with the Creta consistently being a top 10 seller in India right from launch in 2015. A well-received micro SUV could just enhance sales exponentially.

For now, Hyundai has its hands full as it gears up to launch its new small car this festive season.

Third-party insurance for new vehicles mandatory from September 1

The Supreme Court of India has passed a judgment declaring that third-party insurance is compulsory for every new four-wheeler and two-wheeler sold in the country after September 1, 2018.  The new ruling was made on July 20, 2018, in an attempt to provide relief to victims involved in vehicular accidents.

A meeting was held by the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety on March 26, 2018. Here it was noted that there were about 18 crore vehicles plying on the road and only about six crore vehicles had the mandatory third-party insurance cover. In other words, 66 percent of vehicles were running on the road without any third-party insurance cover; and the victims of accidents – including those who have died and their legal representatives – were not getting compensation because vehicles were not insured.

To bypass this problem, particularly by persons who are legal representatives of victims of fatal road accidents, the Committee had detailed discussions with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA), General Insurance Council, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance and the government of India.

After a detailed discussion, the Supreme Court ruled that it has made it clear that the third party insurance cover should mandatorily be for a period of three years (for cars) and five years (for two-wheelers). This may be taken and treated as a separate product. It has been left to the insurance companies to deal with comprehensive insurance policies on a separate footing. It would be at the option of the owner of the vehicle to decide which specific policy should be taken..

Commenting on the new order, said, “The recent order of Supreme Court that every new car sold should have a three year third party liability insurance cover and every new two wheeler sold should have a five year third party liability insurance cover is a welcome verdict," said K G Krishnamoorthy Rao , managing director and CEO, Future Generali India Insurance Company, while commenting on this new order. "As of now a significant percentage of cars and two wheelers are not insured for the mandatory third party insurance, because of which many times the common man who meets with a road accident involving such vehicles do not get adequate compensation. The challenge for the insurance industry to implement the order from September 1 is the readiness of the product and pricing to be approved by the regulator and time required for making changes in the IT systems of the companies.”

Me and My Cars: Narain Karthikeyan

What are you currently driving and why?
A Porsche 911 GT3. It’s the best track-oriented road car you can buy.

What’s next on your automotive wishlist?
Nothing at the moment. Hopefully, it will take a few years for a road car to be significantly better than the GT3.

What’s your money-no-object dream car?
McLaren MP4/4.

Who is your all-time greatest motorsport hero?
Ayrton Senna.

What’s the most fun you’ve had in a car?
Getting behind the wheel of any car is always fun, but it’s racing that always gives me the high. Every race start, waiting for the five lights to go out, is special.

What’s on your automotive bucket list?
I’ve done pretty much everything there is to do. But I’d still like to drive a modern F1 car at the Nürburgring Nordschleife

What’s your favourite road?
Coimbatore to Coonoor.

What would you do with your last litre of fuel?
Put it in my Porsche and do a hot lap - or half a lap, which is more likely!

Your ideal 5-car/bike garage would contain...
1. Porsche 911 GT3
2. Range Rover V8 Autobiography
3. Bugatti Chiron
4. McLaren F1
5. Jaguar E-Type

Which was your first car?
It was a first-generation Maruti 800, a car I learnt to drive in. We would often sneak it out for joyrides, drifting it and really just driving the hell out of it. It was supreme fun!

Mahindra U321 MPV to be named on July 31

A lot is already known about Mahindra’s new upcoming MPV, codenamed U321. The MPV’s name, however, is yet unknown. Come July 31, this will be announced by Mahindra MD Pawan Goenka at a press conference to be held in Mumbai. Along with the name, the company will also share other related information about the new model.

The U321 is the brand’s first passenger car to be developed at Mahindra’s North American Technical Centre. The company had earlier confirmed that the MPV will be assembled at its Nasik production facility and is based on a new platform.

At launch, the U321 will also debut Mahindra’s new 1.6-litre diesel engine, said to develop around 125hp and 320Nm, which in this MPV will initially be mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. Mahindra hasn’t revealed any plans about a petrol-powered iteration as yet. However, based on the carmaker’s plans to ready petrol powertrains to cater to its entire model range by April 2020, it is safe to assume that the U321 will also get a petrol engine at a later date.

The U321 will come in both, seven- and eight-seat configurations and going by Mahindra’s trend, expect the car to be loaded with upmarket comfort and connectivity features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, automatic climate control, projector headlamps and daytime running lamps. These will help it stand tall against the competition.

Talking about its competition, the UV maker had said that the U321 is not a replacement for the Xylo but is a slightly premium product that will be positioned above it. This would mean that the U321 would take on the upcoming second-gen Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, the Renault Lodgy and even the Toyota Innova Crysta at the higher end of the segment.

Lamborghini Aventador SVJ breaks Nurburgring lap record

Video footage taken from on board the new Lamborghini Aventador Superveloce Jota proves that this supercar is the fastest-ever production car to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The video shows the upcoming SVJ completing the lap in a time of 6min 44:97sec – making it 2.27sec faster than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. It’s also just under 15sec faster than the Aventador SV. This successful record attempt was set by Lamborghini factory driver Marco Mapelli.

A report leaked ahead of official confirmation of the lap time claimed that the range-topping Lambo  produces 769hp from its 6.5-litre V12 – 69hp more than the 700hp GT2 RS and 20hp more than Lamborghini's current flagship, the Aventador SV.

The Italian supercar maker will officially reveal the Aventador SVJ at the Monterey Car Week next month. An ever-increasing number of teaser videos have been posted online promoting the same. Previously released videos have boasted about the car having “the best aerodynamic efficiency” and claims of class-leading power-to-weight ratios have also been made.

At the front, there’s a significantly larger front splitter than the one fitted to the McLaren Senna, and a new rear wing is held in place by two curved arms and a centre arm.

The car also sports a new dual-pipe exhaust system at the middle of its back-end, rather than in the centre of the diffuser, like on the SV. This new technique – which is also used by the Huracán Performante – enhances the diffuser’s effectiveness by removing exhaust gases from an aerodynamically sensitive area.

The Aventador S arrived in the second half of 2017 and produces 740hp – 40hp more than the previous version. Applying the same jump to the SV J suggests it could have an output of around 791hp, making it one of the market’s most potent supercars. To put that figure into perspective: that’s 91hp more than the previous Nürburgring record-holder, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

Backing the prospects of this extreme performance on the Aventador is the use of the letter J in its nomenclature. The J – which stands for Jota – has been applied to some of Lamborghini’s most hardcore models, including race-homologated versions of the Miura and Diablo. Although the Aventador will not compete in motor racing — since Lamborghini’s competition efforts are focused on the lighter Huracán — it emphasises the car’s abilities.

Jota models have a history of being produced in extremely low numbers. No more than 28 Diablo Jotas exist, and just one each of the Miura Jota and a more recent Aventador J were produced. This indicates that the Aventador SV J build numbers might be kept below that of the SV; less than 600 units.

Suzuki Vitara Series II leaked ahead of unveil

Suzuki has been working on a mid-life update for its flagship Vitara SUV for quite some time. A first set of images showing the updated model in all its glory has surfaced in Australia.

Not to be confused with the Vitara Brezza – Maruti's sub-four-metre compact SUV for our market – the Vitara is a near 4.2m SUV that’s part of Suzuki’s international line-up.

Likely to be called the Vitara Series II, the refreshed SUV gets a new front grille and minor tweaks to the bumper along with a new lower air intake design that will also include a radar sensor in order to facilitate autonomous emergency braking. It also gets additional faux brushed-aluminum bits on the front bumper near the daytime running light housing.  The images show that the SUV gets a new alloy wheel design as well.

On the inside, Suzuki is expected to equip the Vitara Series II with new upholstery and an updated infotainment system as part of this mid-cycle update.

The pre-facelift Vitara SUV was spied testing in India some time ago. The model spotted on Indian roads was equipped with a 118hp, 1.6-litre diesel motor mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.  There is no confirmation on whether the Vitara SUV will make it to India. If launched, this model could be a strong rival to the popular Hyundai Creta SUV in our domestic market.

Maruti Suzuki did sell the previous-gen Vitara as the Grand Vitara in India, and had the seven-seat Vitara XL7 on sale years ago. However, both models met with limited success owing to their premium pricing and a market position that was at odds with the rest of Maruti’s line-up.

Hyundai to reveal name of new hatchback on October 4

Hyundai will reveal the name of its new small car on October 4, 2018, ahead of the model’s market launch in the last week of the same month.

Autocar India had broken the news of Hyundai toying with the idea of bringing back the Santro name for the budget hatchback, and it is now expected the new small car will be called the Santro, albeit with a suffix.

The 'Santro' name is understood to get a suffix, in the same way ‘Xing’ followed the moniker on the facelifted version of the original car. Hyundai will launch a contest on August 16 inviting suggestions for the model’s full name. Interestingly, Hyundai’s Korean compatriot Kia also ran a campaign inviting names for the production version of the SP concept that will go on sale in 2019.

The Santro is the car that established Hyundai in India and, even today, the name enjoys strong brand equity and recall. Christening the new model Santro has financial implications as well as it could save Hyundai big money that would have been spent on establishing an all-new nameplate. Autocar India has learnt Hyundai is planning a big bang launch for the new model and has earmarked a massive budget for its marketing campaign.

The new Hyundai will come in as a replacement for the Eon. Spy pics of the car spotted on test point to a high roof or tall boy design ( a la the original Santro). In true Hyundai fashion, the car is expected to boast a premium cabin in its materials and fit-finish. The model will be powered by an updated version of the Santro Xing’s 1.1-litre petrol engine and will also be the first Hyundai to be offered with the option of an automated manual transmission based on a five-speed gearbox.

The small car will be a new offering in the budget segment that’s not seen much action of late. Rivals for the new model will include the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 and the Tata Tiago.

JLR trademarks Road Rover name

A year ago, our sister publication, Autocar UK, was told that Jaguar Land Rover was using 'Road Rover' merely as an internal codename for a new model line. Today, JLR has applied for the trademark to the Road Rover moniker.

Brands often apply for name trademarks to ensure that the brand name – or names similar to their other products – can’t be used by rivals as a means to protect potential future branding. However, aside for the name 'Road Rover' being used in internal communications, it had also been touted as a potential name for a number of the carmaker's previous prototypes.

The name could still be used for Land Rover’s first production EV – a premium electric model aimed primarily at markets such as the US and China – which is due before 2020

Road Rover is, like Velar, the name of an experimental model from the company's history. It was first proposed at the beginning of the 1950s as a concept to bridge the gap between Rover cars and the original Land Rover. It was then revived in the 1960s as a three-door estate idea and provided the intellectual basis for the concept that became the original Range Rover.

The first modern Road Rover is understood to be a Mercedes-Benz S-Class rival in terms of outright luxury and interior craftsmanship, albeit with some all-terrain capability. The car will also be tuned for impressive on-road dynamic performance, taking advantage of the potential delivered by electric motors. Over time, the Road Rover line-up is expected to evolve into a series of more car-like and road-friendly vehicles that maintain their generations-old rugged build.

The car is expected to make its public debut at the Los Angeles motor show in late-2019. We still have no idea if the company has intentions of an India launch.

Choosing from a Volvo XC90, Mercedes GLS and Audi Q7

I wish to buy a new luxury SUV for daily use in the city and for some occasional highway trips. My priorities are an imposing road presence, luxurious interiors and all the latest tech. I have my heart set on the Volvo XC90. Is it the right decision or should I consider other options like the Mercedes GLS or Audi Q7?
Raman Maken, New Delhi

AAA The Mercedes GLS is the one to consider if you frequently use the third row of seats – which are the most comfortable out of these three cars. It has good road presence too, but is a bit boxy and not as modern as the XC90 or the Q7, which are overall better cars. In our comparison between the XC90 and the Q7 some time back, the Q7 won due to its strong and smooth 3.0-litre diesel engine. The XC90 ran it close, though. And apart from the 2.0-litre diesel, which isn’t as refined or punchy as the Q7’s motor, the XC90 is a terrific car with fantastic interiors and the latest safety tech. So if your heart is set on the XC90 you can definitely go for it; you won’t be disappointed.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz facelift bookings open

A handful of Maruti Suzuki Nexa dealers have started accepting bookings for the Ciaz facelift, with booking amount ranging from Rs 11,000 to Rs 21,000, depending on the dealership. These bookings are being accepted unofficially by the dealers as Maruti has not yet publicly announced the commencement of bookings. The facelifted Ciaz's launch was slated for the first week of August but has now been pushed to the second-half of the month.

A latest set of spy shots show the Ciaz facelift inside and out. The refreshed sedan now gets a rounder look up front, with a smoother grille that fuses with the headlights; the grille also gets chrome-lined upper and lower edges. Adding to this new look is the redesigned bonnet that flows upwards from the grille. A welcome upgrade on the  Ciaz facelift  is the  switch to LED headlamps, with LED daytime running lights embellishing the look further. The front bumper also gets a new look and sports a wider air dam that connects directly with the fog lamp inserts. Moving on to the sides, the top-spec model gets chrome door handles and a new design for the diamond-cut alloy wheels.

Feature additions on the top-spec Ciaz come in the form of cruise control; auto headlights are expected too.

Powering the Ciaz will be Suzuki’s new 1.5-litre petrol motor that will come in place of the earlier 1.4 petrol. The engine will also be offered on the second-generation Ertiga that comes later this year. While the engine’s 104hp of power is average by sedan class standards, the 1.5-litre petrol unit will stand out for its mild-hybrid tech, branded SHVS by Suzuki.

The SHVS system comes with start-stop technology and uses an integrated starter generator (ISG). The ISG functions as a battery charger during braking and acts as the starter motor when the start-stop technology is in use. SHVS-equipped cars also get an electric boost via the Engine Power Assist (EPA) system, where the ISG supplements the engine’s power during acceleration. This system will continue to be offered on the unchanged 1.3-litre diesel engine powering the refreshed Ciaz.

This new petrol-hybrid system could also make its way to the next-gen Ertiga, which will be Maruti’s next big launch, later this year. Maruti is also working on an all-new, in-house, 1.5-litre diesel engine that will be introduced on its models at a later stage.

While prices for the updated Ciaz are not yet, we can tell you that there are good deals currently available on unsold stocks of the outgoing, pre-facelift Ciaz. Nexa dealers are offering discounts ranging from Rs 75,000 to Rs 1.3 lakh (depending on inventory and location) on the car.

Review: 2018 Hyundai Kona Electric review, test drive

WHAT IS IT?

While the Kona Electric is not Hyundai’s first electric model in its international line-up, the SUV will be the Korean brand’s first EV in India, when it arrives in mid-2019.

EVs abroad largely fall into two categories – those that are built from scratch as electric vehicles (read: Tesla) and those that have their standard internal combustion engines replaced with batteries and an electric motor.

The advantage of purpose-built EVs is that they make good use of the packaging benefits that come with a compact, relatively simple powertrain; and they also tend to have higher-capacity batteries. An adapted EV, meanwhile, suffers all the same packaging disadvantages as a conventional car and will typically have a smaller-capacity battery.

The Kona Electric car falls smack between these two types, as it isn’t quite a dedicated electric vehicle. While there are petrol and diesel variants of the Kona that share this platform, an EV model was always part of Hyundai's plan. The most apparent manifestation of that is the location of the batteries. They're spread out across the floor beneath the passenger compartment, just as they are in Tesla cars. This is precisely where you want them, because the car’s centre of gravity is kept close to the road and boot space is left well alone. Plus, with the batteries spread out like that, there's room for far more cells than could be squeezed into an adapted car.

Armed with the larger-capacity 64kWh battery, the Kona Electric can cover 483km on a single charge (the cheaper model – which is expected to arrive in India with a 39kWh battery – has a range of 312km). To put this into perspective, Tata claims that the Tigor EV that has been supplied to various organisations in India is capable of going 142km on a single charge (as certified by ARAI).

In look, the Kona EV defers to its internal combustion engine siblings in its details. The traditional mesh grille has been done away with, and the panel that takes its place houses an opening for the charging socket. It has more aero-friendly wheels too. Call it a small SUV or crossover; it’s a smart looking vehicle. As for the interior: there are some hard and scratchy plastics inside, but feels very well built. Interior space is quite good, considering the car’s compact dimensions – which make it quite nice around town.

WHAT'S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

In some ways, the Kona Electric is a bit like a purpose-built EV; but in another ways, it's much more akin to an adapted electric car. For one, there is torque steer – flatten the accelerator pedal at low or medium speeds and the car drags itself left and right across the width of the road, recalling the sort of frantic on-boost behaviour that made certain performance cars of the 1980s and 1990s such a handful.

This handling trait is a very long way from being dangerous, but it can take you by surprise. It happens in every one of the Kona Electric's driving modes, too – even the most sedate Eco mode. Wheelspin away from the line is another problem – it’s all torque-related. The Kona Electric’s motor puts out 395Nm of torque; all to the front wheels, and it does so instantaneously. The solution, of course, is to drive with a lighter right foot, but working around a problem doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

The simple fact is the Kona’s chassis doesn’t feel up to the job of delivering that much electric torque to the road through a single axle. In that sense, it's a bit like an adapted EV.

Feisty torque steer and wheelspin aside, this is a likeable car. There certainly is an eagerness to the chassis – a keen balance, even – that you simply don’t expect to see in small EVs. It's far less flat-footed than the Renault Zoe, for instance. It also feels lighter than its 1,685kg, whereas many electric cars feel conspicuously heavy. Below 96kph or so, the Kona Electric has a brisk turn of pace, which means you can zip past slower traffic quite happily.

There are four levels of regenerative braking, which you scroll through using steering-wheel-mounted paddles, from one-pedal driving to none at all. Regardless of which mode you have engaged, the brake pedal is strangely inconsistent. The steering, too, is afflicted by an unusual tug just around the straight-ahead, as though your passenger is gently pulling on the wheel.

SHOULD I BUY ONE?

When it arrives in India in 2019, the Kona EV will be the first vehicle of its kind and will sure have a lot of novelty value. What it won’t be, though, is cheap. Hyundai does have plans to assemble the model in India, but even so, prices will be close to the Rs 25 lakh-mark; which is a lot of money for what is not a lot of SUV, going strictly by size. Then again – it’s not intended to be a volume seller. Hyundai expects sales of around 50-60 units a month.

If you are enticed by the prospect of going electric, the Kona EV does make for a model to look out for; because if our first impression is anything to go by, the Kona Electric is that rarest of things – a small electric vehicle with character.

Nine of 15 Maruti Suzuki models meet new crash test norms

Maruti Suzuki has disclosed that nine of its 15-model-strong passenger car line-up meet India’s latest crash test norms. The new norms for full-frontal impact, off-set-frontal impact and side impact have been in force on all cars launched in India since October 1, 2017. From October 1, 2019, these norms will also extend to all cars currently being sold in the country. Additionally, as of October 1, 2018, the new pedestrian protection norms will be enforced on all new launches and after October 1, 2020, these norms will go on to cover all cars on sale in the market.

Maruti Suzuki has made public that the S-Cross, Ciaz, Ertiga, Vitara Brezza, Baleno, Dzire, Swift, Ignis and Celerio models already meet the future frontal, off-set-frontal, side impact and pedestrian crash norms. Of these models, the Ciaz is due for a refresh while an all-new Ertiga is headed to India later this year.

As for the other models, the carmaker has stated that ‘the rest of the models will be compliant to the crash norms ahead of the regulatory timelines.’ Given that the next-gen WagonR is in the works and replacements for the Alto K10 and Alto 800 are also in development, Maruti’s disclosure puts a question mark on the future of the remaining three models – namely the Omni, Eeco and Gypsy. These models will likely require substantial re-engineering to be made crash-test-compliant, so the incoming crash test norms could just as likely be the end of the road for these models in their current form.

Little is known of replacements for the Omni and Eeco as yet but Maruti is unlikely to vacate the high volumes segment; the Omni sold 80,583 units in the last fiscal year while the Eeco raked-up sales of 74,554 units in the same period.

Globally, Suzuki has revealed the new-gen Jimny which would make for a new-age (and crash norms-ready) replacement for the long-standing Gypsy, though Maruti has not (yet) confirmed any plans of manufacturing this car in India.

Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki has a full-fledged crash test facility at its state-of-the-art R&D and validation facility in Rohtak, Haryana. In the past, the carmaker had revealed that it conducts 35-40 crash tests for every new model in development.

All-new Mercedes-Benz A-class sedan revealed

Mercedes-Benz has released a first set of images and details of the standard version of its new A-class sedan.

The latest-gen A-class range has already been seen in hatchback and China-only long-wheelbase sedan form. The global sedan with a conventional wheelbase length, designed to rival the Audi A3 sedan and upcoming BMW 2-series Gran Coupé, will make its public debut at the Paris motor show in October.

As it slots into Mercedes' line-up under the C-class sedan, it will become the German carmaker’s most affordable four-door model; in a move that mirrors the 1982 launch of the original 190, which sat beneath the E-class and was subsequently rebadged as the C-class.

Mercedes has confirmed that the A-class sedan will be offered with just two engines initially, although further units are planned once production is ramped up.

The enigne options at launch are a turbocharged 1.3-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with 163hp and 250Nm (badged as the A 200) and a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel with 116hp and 260Nm (badged as the A 180d). Both come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, although, as with the hatchback, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic 'box with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles is an option.

Together with standard front-wheel-drive versions of the A-class sedan, Mercedes also plans to offer a limited number of four-wheel-drive 4Matic variants, including the A 35 4Matic and A 45 4Matic models from its AMG performance division. The A-class sedan adopts the same front-end styling treatment as the A-class hatchback, with a prominent grille and angular headights that taper into the leading edge of the front fenders.

It’s only behind the B-pillars that the sedan differs from the hatchback, with a longer roof, longer rear doors and a longer rear overhang to accommodate a short, separate boot. At 4,549mm long, 1,796mm wide and 1,446mm tall, the sedan is 130mm longer, has the same width and is 6mm taller than the hatchback, with an identical wheelbase of 2,729mm. In comparison, the Audi A3 sedan measures 4,458mm long, 1,796mm wide and 1,415mm tall, with a 2,637mm wheelbase.

Mercedes says a relatively small frontal area and the extended rear overhang of the sedan make it highly aerodynamically efficient. It has a Cd of 0.22, beating the 0.23 Cd of the firm’s previous aerodynamic production champion, the first-gen CLA four-door coupe.

Inside, the A-class sedan features the same dashboard and advanced infotainment functions as the new hatchback, including Mercedes' new MBUX infotainment system with touchscreen control and speech recognition. Mercedes claims the sedan offers above-average shoulder, elbow and headroom for front seat occupants and class-leading headroom for those in the rear. Its 420-litre boot capacity, however, doesn’t quite match the 425 litres of the smaller A3 sedan.

The A-class sedan is built on Mercedes-Benz’s MFA II platform and, as with the hatch, utilises two rear suspension layouts - a torsion beam arrangement on cheaper models and a multi-link system on higher-end variants. The model will be initially built at Mercedes' Rastatt plant in Germany and in Aguascalientes, Mexico, at a new joint venture factory run in co-operation with Renault-Nissan. The long-wheelbase version for the Chinese market is built at Beijing Benz Automotive in China.

The A-class sedan is the sixth member of Mercedes-Benz’s small car line-up, joining the A-class hatchback, B-class MPV, CLA coupé, CLA Shooting Brake and GLA crossover in an expanded line-up that will also include an Audi Q3 and BMW X1-rivalling SUV called the GLB, by the end of 2019.
