Nissan and Italdesign unveil GT-R50 prototype

To celebrate 50 years of the GT-R and Italdesign, Nissan has revealed a GT-R prototype which was created in collaboration with the design house.

Named the GT-R50, the one-off collaboration is based on the GT-R Nismo. The development, engineering and building of the car was all Italdesign’s work, while the design itself was a project undertaken by Nissan’s London and San Diego design centres.

No element of the car’s outward appearance remains untouched – even its roof line has been lowered by 54mm. The prototype is longer, wider and lower to the ground than the Nismo on which it’s based. Gold highlights have been used throughout the exterior, which seems to have undergone a dramatic restyle. Meanwhile, the car’s original features have been exaggerated and improved on an aerodynamic level, including its huge adjustable rear wing.

With respect to performance, the car’s 3.8-litre V6 engine now produces 720hp and 780Nm of torque – up from the 600hp and 652Nm of the ‘regular’ GT-R Nismo. Its performance has been boosted, given the car’s special prototype status. It has also been fitted with race-spec turbochargers, a larger intercooler system, adjustable dampers, and heavy-duty crankshaft, pistons, bearings and connecting rods. Its intake and exhaust systems have been tweaked to achieve the 120hp boost from the Nismo’s figures.

 “How often do you get to ask, ‘What if we created a GT-R without limits,’ and then actually get to build it?” said Nissan design boss Alfonso Albaisa. “This is a rare window in time when two big moments intersect: 50 years of Italdesign shaping the automotive world and 50 years of Nissan generating excitement through our iconic GT-R. So to celebrate this convergence, Nissan and Italdesign created this custom GT-R to mark 50 years of engineering leadership.”

The Japanese carmaker quickly clarified that the car is not related to the next-generation GT-R (due around 2020) but wouldn’t comment when asked whether Italdesign would be involved in the next GT-R’s development. The next-gen GT-R is expected to have a high-output hybrid powertrain and retain its four-wheel-drive drivetrain.

2018 Toyota Crown revealed

Toyota brought out the latest generation of its flagship luxury sedan in the Japanese market. Currently in its 15th generation, the Crown is also among the first generation of cars that will be equipped with Toyota’s Data Communication Module as standard; the other car being the recently revealed Corolla Sport.

The brand’s new connected car technology offers 24x7 connectivity services focused on safety, security, comfort, and convenience based on real-time driving data. The data communication module helps connect with other cars, and infrastructure as well, to aid in safer driving. The car also gets Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 – a suite of features that includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, intelligent cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and even auto high beams.

The Crown is underpinned by a new platform, which is based on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) strategy. The powertrain options include two hybrid systems and a turbo-petrol engine. The 2.5-litre petrol-hybrid system has a combined output of 226hp, the bigger 3.5-litre V6 petrol-hybrid system puts out over 359hp and is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, while the turbo-petrol engine makes 245hp and 350Nm of torque. All the powertrains have been placed lower in the body to achieve a lower center of gravity. The ;models were tested on the Nürburgring circuit during its development.

The car has a low slung nose and has a long sleek profile that runs all the way to the boot. There is also an RS variant on offer which offers 18-inch aluminum wheels, four exhaust tailpipes, a rear spoiler and black door frames. The interiors feature a clean design dashboard with dual displays. An 8-inch display sits at the back for viewing information while driving while a 7-inch screen is placed at the bottom for easier operation.

There has been no official word about the Crown coming to India; however, the all-new Corolla which is based on the same TNGA platform will make it to our country.

NIO begins delivery of ES8 SUV

Four-year-old Chinese electric vehicle start-up NIO, which has been in partnership with Tata Technologies since 2015, has started deliveries of its first electric, all-aluminium, seven-seater SUV, the ES8.
 
Claimed to be a high-performance SUV, the ES8 has been developed exclusively for the Chinese market. It comes with an onboard NIO pilot system, an advanced autonomous driving assistant system, and a claimed first-in-car AI system nicknamed ‘NOMI’.
 
The company claims the vehicle equipped with E-AWD can accelerate from 0-100kph in 4.4sec, has the latest-generation of active air suspension, and a braking distance of 33.8m, deaccelerating from 100kph to zero kph.  
 
In an exclusive interview with our sister publication Autocar Professional, Warren Harris, managing director and CEO, Tata Technologies, said: “The association between Tata Technologies and NIO was initiated in mid-2015, very close to NIO’s inception as an ambitious next-gen EV start-up. Since then, Tata Technologies has engaged with NIO to drive major engineering aspects related to the development of the ES8, such as body structures, closures and exteriors, advanced manufacturing engineering, PLM, and off-car connectivity.”
 
“Tata Technologies was able to pool in experts and teams from China, India, UK and Romania to work together with the NIO engineering team to deliver the final product which adhered to the highest standards in safety and finesse.”
 
“The first finished product – the ES8 – is an all-aluminium SUV that broke lightweight index benchmarks and was delivered in record time from a blank page to a validation vehicle in world-class duration.”
 
“With the goal of creating a product-development process that would establish an industry benchmark, NIO and Tata Technologies have worked on a range of concepts on weight optimisation using advanced materials. The team has worked on creating a process that would pioneer the way for more advanced material-based vehicles in China. The result of implementing such expertise is that the ES8 is currently achieving body weight efficiency targets better than the EuroCarBody Conference best,” added Harris.

Audi-Airbus flying taxi gets approval from German government

Audi and Airbus’s flying taxi concept looks ready to take off in Ingolstadt, following the signing of a letter of intent by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The concept, which was shown at the Geneva motor show, features a passenger pod that can be attached either to an electric car base or quadcopter top. The autonomous vehicle can either drive itself on the road or fly itself.

Merkel’s backing will allow the project to move onto testing on the road and the sky – something that she said would help provide a solution to Germany’s growing urban traffic problem, as well as offer a boost to the technology industry.

“Flying taxis aren’t a vision any longer, they can take us off into a new dimension of mobility,” German transport minister Andreas Scheuer told Bloomberg. “They’re a huge opportunity for companies and young start-ups that already develop this technology very concretely and successfully.”

Flying taxis have become increasingly popular with tech companies because of their ability to transport passengers door to door without the need for a runway. 

Uber is developing its own flying taxi with the intention of launching it in 2020. Lilium, a German start-up, is also creating its own, with hopes that it will take to the skies from 2025.

New Audi A1 a possibility for India

German luxury carmaker Audi could bring its Mini-rivalling small car, the A1, to India. The head of Audi's India operations, Rahil Ansari, hinted at the possibility of introducing the A1 if the government relaxes import norms for luxury cars.

The government is mulling over allowing foreign carmakers to import vehicles without having them undergo homologation if the vehicles have already been certified by international testing agencies, according to a report by Times of India.

The move, which will allow automakers to import 2,500 units per annum, is reportedly aimed at encouraging local manufacturing and will enable them to test waters for their models and gauge customer response before establishing local assembly operations.

Ansari told Autocar India that he hopes the move is passed, as it will give the company a great opportunity to test the demand for its models, especially in new segments. "It is a favourable development and we hope it is passed soon because it will also allow us to give customers the choice of a wider variety of cars," he said.

The recently revealed second-generation A1 is expected to draw new and young customers to the brand in international markets with its low-slung proportions and sporty styling further accentuated by elements such as twin tailpipes, larger air inlets, and a larger rear wing.

The A1 gets an infotainment system with a 10.1-inch MMI touchscreen on the higher trims, navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and wireless charging. Powertrain options include a 95hp, 1.0-litre three-cylinder, and a 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol units making up to 200hp.

The introduction of the A1 could heighten activity in the luxury hatchback segment in India, which currently has models such as the Mini range, which has seen decent success, as well as the VW GTI.

Truth and dare

Since this is a family magazine, we can’t tell you about the bet that set the wheels rolling on this road trip. Long story short: our two protagonists, Ouseph and Rohan, had a bet and Ouseph lost. So, Rohan got to choose the mode of transport for this trip and Ouseph got to pick the route. There’s more to this.

See, Rohan has lived all his life in Mumbai, dresses stylishly even when he goes to the loo and pays serious attention to his appearance. He isn’t very familiar with the outdoors, thinks camping is for gypsies and cannot imagine answering nature’s call in the great wide open. Ouseph knows this and decides that it is high time Rohan got some grime under his fingernails.

Cut to a tiny Himalayan town call Bairagarh in Himachal Pradesh. Ouseph caught the bus to get here and Rohan arrived late at night in his chosen vehicle – the new Renault Captur. The plan is to drive 30km up to the top of the 14,000ft Sach Pass, continue down into Pangi valley and find a nice place to camp. Ouseph’s been to Pangi valley before and knows a couple beautiful spots they can go set up camp. The only problem is that he knows that the roads ahead are difficult and narrow. You see, Pangi valley is still rather off the tourist map, so the roads aren’t as well-maintained as the roads around Manali and Shimla. The dangers that they face ahead include (but are not limited to) freak landslides, tyre-slicing rocks, boulder fields, possible snow storms and drops big enough to give an eagle serious vertigo.

Ouseph is a bit sceptical when he sees the front-wheel-drive Captur in the morning. The past few times he’s been here, he’s come this way in a four-wheel-drive vehicle and he’s not sure if the Captur will make the road. Rohan, on the other hand, is fully confident of the Captur’s abilities. Ouseph rolls his eyes but decides that this can be an interesting challenge. In the boot is a two-man tent, two folding chairs and the road ahead promises treacherous terrain and real adventure. What better way to find out if both Rohan and the Captur are made of strong stuff.

The road up to Sach Pass is narrow at places, has deep sand in others and, runs quite steep, up to the top. If all goes well, they expect to be at another remote village called Killar, deep inside Pangi valley. Ouseph knows a good spot above Killar that has running water nearby and flat ground to pitch a tent on.

They cross the Satrundi checkpost on the way up to Sach and are immediately thrown into the deep end. The road is narrow and climbs through dense pine forest and somewhere along the way is when they run into a hoard of taxis bringing tourists back from the ‘snow point’ just below Sach Pass. Ouseph has to reverse a fair bit to where the road is wider and he loves the Captur’s reverse camera. For two cars to pass each other on this road, you need to use every inch of available space and the reverse camera helps Ouseph do just that. The taxis get through and the boys continue the climb to Sach.

Rohan gloats a little as Ouseph comments on the strong on-boost torque of the Captur. He can see Ouseph slowly falling for the Captur’s many charms. They climb steadily past 10,000ft and Ouseph knows that all cars lose power up here, so he is careful to not lose momentum and keep the turbo spinning away happily. On a couple of occasions, they are forced to stop and assess the ground they have to traverse and it is here that the Captur’s hill-start assist makes starting off on steep inclines easy. Ouseph comments about how the Captur makes this difficult terrain look rather simple.

Rohan marvels at the landscape as they climb above the treeline while Ouseph can’t believe how the Captur sails over big rocks that have fallen on the road. See, on most other roads, the road is wide enough to drive around obstacles. Not up here. Up here, there simply isn’t enough space between the mountain side and a free fall is guaranteed if a wheel is placed wrong.

Also, good ground clearance is essential and the Captur’s 210mm means Ouseph can confidently sail over rocks and deep ruts left by trucks without the fear of gouging out vital bits of the Captur.

They go through a couple of streams fed by glacial melt, swing a left through the ice tunnel that remains from last winter and get to a small temple at the top, with an even smaller sign board that says Sach Pass. Ouseph is in wonder of the ease with which the Captur made it up here but he knows the road down the pass is even more treacherous. A couple of celebratory selfies later, Ouseph starts to get nervous.

The weather up on a pass is very unpredictable and can change in minutes. A dark grey cloud is rolling in and the temperature drops as wind rushes through the pass. They retreat into the comfort of the Captur’s warm climate-controlled cabin and head to lower altitudes.

A tight turning radius and ABS makes the descent through this road’s slippery hairpins a cinch. Killar is just 40km away but the boulder fields on the way forces them to slow down. Rohan has gone into a trance, mesmerised by the desolate beauty of Pangi valley. It is his first time here.

The Captur easily makes its way down the pass, a small white speck in an immense moonscape. Sharp rocks that can easily make mince meat out of the tyres have to be driven over carefully but otherwise, the Captur takes everything the road throws up in its stride.

Rohan says he feels like they are driving through a set of The Lord of the Rings and he’s been clicking away on his phone. They drive through a couple of waterfalls that fall onto the road, get pelted by a few pebbles falling downthe mountainside (no damage, luckily) and descend below the treeline.

They reach Killar just in time to pick up a few supplies, make their way to the helipad and set up camp with visual aid provided by the Captur’s powerful headlights.

Hot chai is brewed and they sit back and take in the peace and quiet that you get only in areas where there is no cell phone network.

Ouseph tells Rohan that he is impressed with the Captur. It has taken a beating and come out unscathed. He also gushes about how comfortably the Captur brought them here. He says that he is usually very tired by the time he gets to Killar because of how tough the road is but this time he’s absolutely fine.

Rohan goes on to say how unbelievably beautiful Pangi valley is. He says that they should have more bets like

SACH PASS

Sach Pass, on the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas is the 12th-highest pass in the country at an altitude of 14,500ft. Located in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district, it connects Chamba Valley with Pangi Valley and is open only from June to mid-October. So Pangi valley effectively remains cut-off from the rest of the country for the rest of the year. The road conditions at the pass are extreme. It’s narrow and unmetalled, with treacherous drops scaling hundreds of feet. Avalanches and heavy snowfalls can sometimes block some sections of the road and can be extremely dangerous due to frequent patches of ice. This is not a road for a novice driver.this simply because he knows that everybody won. Ouseph agrees wholeheartedly. End of story.

Porsche slashes all-time Nurburgring lap record by nearly a minute

Earlier today, Porsche driver Timo Bernhard and a heavily modified 919 Evo Le Mans racer lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 5min 19.545sec, obliterating the earlier record by 51.584sec. The previous record of 6min 11.13sec was set by Stefan Bellof, behind the wheel of a Porsche 956 Group C race car during the qualifying for the 1,000km race in 1983.

Porsche previously hinted that it will return to the 12.93-mile (20.8km) circuit for the record run after speculation swirled about the record attempt. In a tweet showing photos of 919 Evo at the circuit, Porsche said: "Well, Timo Bernhard loves that track... Perhaps he comes again."

The 919 Evo is based on Porsche’s successful Le Mans 24 Hours racer, which won the event last year before the firm withdrew from endurance racing. Porsche and Bernhard broke the record earlier today, with a time of 5min 24.375sec, but a subsequent attempt smashed the record once again.

Freed of the need to meet the class regulations, Porsche dramatically reworked the 919 for a ‘Tribute Tour’, to produce 53 percent more downforce, while reducing its weight by 39kg to 849kg. Also reworked is the hybrid powertrain – so the 2.0-litre V4 engine produces 720hp, with an extra 439hp coming from an electric motor.

As part of the Tribute Tour, Neel Jani used the 919 Hybrid to lap the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium in a record 1min 41.770secs, eclipsing the record of 1min 42.553sec set by Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes during the qualifying for the 2017 Belgian Grand Prix.

New cars and SUVs launched in 2018

Most carmakers in India, particularly the premium manufacturers, have been on a launching spree since 2018 began. While the 2018 Auto Expo saw its share of new car launches, the rest of the year hasn’t been slow either.

The first launch of the year was a special edition Kwid and the most expensive one (so far) has been the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Additionally, Hyundai brought out the refreshed i20 (and then a CVT for the petrol version) while Datsun, Maruti and Tata have added a dash of convenience to their respective models with AMT-equipped variants. The month of May saw the largest number of launches so far in 2018, totaling 16. Here’s our comprehensive list of the launches so far this year.

JUNE

Bentley Bentayga V8 (Jun 7)

Differences between the full-fat W12 and V8 Bentayga can only be found under the hood. The 549hp, 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is capable of pushing the over 2-tonne SUV to 100kph in a claimed 4.5secs (the W12 does it in 4.1secs). The cabin now gets a new colour for the leather upholstery – the chestnut-coloured ‘Cricket ball’.

BMW X3 xDrive30i (Jun 12)

The petrol X3 gets a 252hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine paired to an eight-speed automatic in the xDrive 30i. Unlike the xDrive20d – which can be had in a lower Expedition trim – the xDrive30i is only available in a single, fully-loaded Luxury Line variant. As such it gets the touch-and-gesture-controlled iDrive infotainment system, a head-up display and 360-degree cameras.

Tata Tigor Buzz (Jun 13)

The limited-run special edition of the compact sedan is based on the mid-spec XT variant and comes with the same petrol and diesel engine options. While there aren’t any mechanical changes, the Buzz sports a glossy black roof, piano black finish on the mirrors, dual-tone wheel covers and red inserts on the front grille, air-con vents and seats.
Price: Rs 5.68-6.57 lakh

Jaguar F-type SVR Coupe, Convertible (Jun 13)

The 2018 facelifts for range-topping F-Type Coupe and Convertible get minor exterior changes. The SVR-badged models get power by the same 575hp, 5.0-litre supercharged V8 motor, that powers all-four wheels via an eight-speed automatic. Despite weight saving measure like a titanium and Inconel exhaust, they weigh over 1.7 tonnes.

Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe (Jun 18)

While the refreshed two-door performance coupe gets cosmetic tweaks, more equipment and shares its 4.0-litre, twin-turbo, V8 and nine-speed automatic with the smaller E 63 S 4Matic+, the S 63 Coupe gets it in a higher 612hp/900Nm state of tune. 100kph comes up in a claimed 3.5secs.

Jeep Compass Bedrock (Jun 18)

A limited-run Compass, it is based on the base Sport trim and is only available with the 173hp, 2.0-litre diesel engine. Besides standard kit on the base variant, the Bedrock edition adds black-finished 16-inch alloy wheels, door decals and black roof rails. The previously available 5.0-inch infotainment system now doubles as a reversing camera as well.

Mitsubishi Outlander (Jun 21)

The all-new seven-seat Outlander is available in one fully-loaded trim and a 167hp, 2.4-litre petrol engine mated to a six-step CVT automatic that powers all-four wheels. The Skoda Kodiaq-rival gets an electric sunroof and parking brake, paddleshifters, leather seats, and a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

BMW 630d GT (Jun 21)

The diesel 6-series GT has arrived in two variants – Luxury Line and M Sport – that can be differentiated by their level of kit and sportier exterior styling on the higher-spec trim. The 3.0-litre in-line, six-cylinder diesel engine is shared with the 530d and comes in the same 265hp and 620Nm state of tune.

Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription (Jun 27)

A more affordable version of the plug-in hybrid XC90, the T8 Inscription is powered by the same 407hp and 400Nm petrol-electric powertrain, with the 320hp supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine driving the front wheels and an 87hp, electric motor driving the rear wheels. Volvo claims an all-electric range of 40km. The kit offered is identical to the XC90 Inscription diesel and includes a panoramic sunroof, four-zone climate control, a 19-speaker Bowers and Wilkins audio system, air suspension, a head-up display, ventilated front seats and Nappa leather upholstery

Audi Q5 petrol (Jun 28)

Available in two variants – Premium Plus and Technology, the petrol Q5 is badged as the 45 TFSI and is powered by the same 252hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol motor found on the larger Q7. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The outside, inside and equipment levels are the same as on the diesel counterpart.

Range Rover, Range Rover Sport facelifts (Jun 28)

Land Rover has launched the 2018-year models of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The mid-life facelifts have been updated in terms of design and in terms of equipment, bringing both SUVs in line with the Velar. The Range Rover and Range River Sport also share the 340hp, 3.0-litre V6 petrol, the 525hp, V8 petrol, the 358hp, 3.0-litre V6 diesel and the 340hp, 4.4-litre diesel engines.

Hyundai brought out the refreshed Creta on May 21

Tata Nexon AMT (May 2)

Only launched in the top-spec XZA+ trim, the six-speed AMT is offered on both engine options. Besides the badging and the optional dual-tone exterior finish, there isn’t much to differentiate the manual from the automatic. The AMT gets hill-start assist and the creep function, along with a manual mode, which automatically changes the engine’s drive mode to Sport.

Mini Countryman (May 3)

The new Countryman gets a 192hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine in two trims – Cooper S and Cooper S JCW – and a 190hp, 2.0-litre diesel engine shared with its rival, the BMW X1. Besides the engine, it also shares its platform and iDrive touchscreen infotainment system. The S and SD trims get 17-inch alloys, while the JCW gets 18-inchers, as well as cosmetic changes.

Mercedes-AMG E 63 S (May 4)

Based on standard model rather than the long-wheelbase edition sold in India, the hottest E-class gets a 612hp/850Nm, 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 powering all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The E 63 S 4Matic+ also comes with a raft of design updates to match the ballistic performance of this BMW M5 rival.

Nissan Terrano Sport Edition (May 8)

A special edition of the Terrano SUV, the Sport Edition is only offered with the 85hp diesel version (and not the 110hp diesel or the 104hp petrol). The limited-run model gets several cosmetic changes outside, like red-and-black decals, a contrasting black roof and pillars, and new cladding on the wheel arches. On the inside, the cabin now features a dual-tone finish and navigation as standard. Interestingly, the price for the 85hp XL (O) trim (with which it shares other equipment) is the same as the special edition.

Maruti Vitara Brezza AMT (May 9)

Maruti’s AMT-equipped rival to the Tata Nexon AMT comes in three trim levels and gets slightly different looks when compared to the manual models. The cabin is all-black, there’s a new orange exterior finish and black alloy wheels on the top-spec trim. The line-up also gets the more standard safety kit – like two airbags, reverse parking sensors and ABS with EBD. It remains otherwise unchanged.

Maruti Ertiga Limited Edition (May 11)

In a bid to move stocks of its MPV before the all-new second-gen model launches, Maruti Suzuki has released a limited edition model based on the mid-spec V trim. It is available on the 925hp, 1.4-litre petrol model and 90hp, 1.3-litre diesel model and is mechanically unchanged. The extra Rs 13,000-14,000 gets you the option of three new paint finishes, a chrome finish on the fog lamp bezel, chrome on the side moulding, alloy wheels, a rear spoiler and ‘Limited Edition’ badges. The insides now come with new dark red seat covers with white borders, a faux-wood inlay on the centre console, a dual-tone steering cover, a front centre armrest and ambient lighting for the cabin.
Price: Rs 7.80-9.71 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi)

Ford EcoSport S (May 14)

The 125hp, 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine now comes on the EcoSport S trim. Unlike the pre-facelift model with a five-speed manual, the engine is now mated to a six-speed unit. The top-spec variant also gets stiffer suspension, a quicker steering, a sunroof and HID headlamps. The EcoSport Signature Edition shares its powertrain with the standard model but gets more features.

Honda Amaze (May 16)

The second-gen Maruti Dzire rival is better-looking, better-equipped and more spacious than before. Offered in four trims and two engine options – 90hp, 1.2-litre petrol and 100hp, 1.5-litre diesel – both engines now come with a CVT automatic option. However, it only comes on the mid-spec S and V trims.
Price: Rs 5.60-9.00 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi)

Hyundai i20 CVT (May 21)

The updated i20 finally gets a CVT automatic with the 83hp, 1.2-litre petrol engine. Earlier offered with a larger 1.4-litre petrol, the pricing for the automatics trims (decreased thanks to Indian vehicular laws for sub-4m cars) now undercuts competition like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno.

Hyundai Creta facelift (May 21)

Launched in five trim levels, three engine options and two transmission options, the refreshed Maruti S-Cross rival gets design-based tweaks to the exterior and more standard kit – even the base trim gets driver’s seat height-adjust and a front sliding armrest. The top-spec also gets a sunroof, a six-way adjustable powered driver’s seat, a smart key band, wireless charging and six airbags.

Lexus LX 570 (May 21)

The petrol version of Lexus’ flagship SUV is powered by a 5.7-litre V8 engine making 367hp and 530Nm of torque. Unlike the diesel that gets a six-speed automatic, the petrol engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic that powers all four wheels. In addition, the petrol version gets a 138-litre fuel tank (up from the diesel’s 93 litres) and three rows of seats (the diesel is a five-seater). The features list, however, is the same as the 450d.
Price: Rs 2.33 crore (ex-showroom, India)

Mercedes-AMG SLC 43, GLE 43 limited editions (May 21)

Mercedes-AMG has brought out the GLE 43 4Matic Coupé OrangeArt edition and SLC 43 RedArt edition, both of which have a limited run of just 25 units, each. As the names imply, both models get highlights on the lower section of the front and rear bumper and on the black-finished alloy wheels (21-inchers for the GLE and 18-inchers for the SLC). While both get a few more cosmetic tweaks inside and out, they are mechanically the same, getting power from a 367hp, 3.0-litre, V6 turbo-petrol motor mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.
Price: Rs 87.84 lakh/Rs 1.02 crore (ex-showroom, India)

Mini Cooper facelift (May 24)

After bringing the new Countryman, Mini has also launched the facelift for its hatchback. Like before, it is available in three-door, five-door and convertible body styles. The three-door is available with the 192hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and the 114hp, 1.5-litre diesel engine; the five-door is only a diesel, while the convertible is a petrol-only model. Besides the tweaks to the design and appearance (including the eye-catching Union Jack flag motif on the tail-lamps) the petrol engine also gets a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission offer that can be operated via steering-mounted paddleshifters.
Price: Rs 29.70-37.10 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

Mahindra TUV300 Plus (May 26)

The lengthened version of the TUV300 compact SUV has launched in a single T4 trim and looks like the standard model but gets a unique rear design as it is 401mm longer. It is powered by a 120hp/280Nm, 2.2-litre diesel engine, though unlike the TUV300, the Plus gets a six-speed manual and mild-hybrid tech.
Price: Rs 9.69 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi)
Competition: Maruti Ertiga, Renault Lodgy

Porsche Cayenne Turbo (May 29)

The all-new Cayenne comes to India in its range-topping avatar, the Cayenne Turbo. It is powered by a 550hp, 4.0-litre petrol V8 (up 30hp over its predecessor), and has a torque rating of 770Nm. While the new model sports only subtle changes to the exterior, extensive use of aluminium in the body means its weight is down by 65kg over the previous model. The cabin features a new design and is technologically advanced with equipment such as a touchscreen and voice control. Standard variants and the E-Hybrid are expected in the near future.
Price: Rs 1.92 crore (ex-showroom)

BMW 3-series Shadow Edition (Apr 2)

BMW brought out a special edition for its 3-series, the Shadow Edition, which is available with the 252hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol in the 330i and the 190hp, 2.0-litre turbo-diesel in the 320d. The exterior of the sedan has been tweaked to provide a sportier look, while the insides get a red-and-black combo for the seat upholstery, a 10.5-inch digital instrument cluster, M Sport leather steering wheel and an 8.7-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 330i also gets a variable sport steering system.
Price: Rs 41.40-47.30 lakh (ex-showroom, India)

Mercedes-Benz GLS Grand Edition (Apr 4)

A special edition GLS to help increase sales of the premium luxury SUV, the Grand Edition is available with the 258hp/620Nm, 3.0-litre V6 diesel in the GLS 350d and the 333hp/480Nm, 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine in the GLS 400. Besides a few cosmetic changes on the outside and inside, the limited-run model gets a rear seat entertainment system as standard, which was previously only an option on the GLS. This comprises of two 7.0-inch high-definition touchscreen infotainment screens mounted on the front seat backs; they are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible.
Price: Rs 82.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India)

Toyota Camry Hybrid (Apr 11)

The for-2018 update of the Camry Hybrid gets a few tweaks to the interiors, more safety kit and technology. The new model is otherwise unchanged, both, in terms of its exteriors and under the bonnet. It is powered by the same 160hp, 2.5-litre petrol engine combined with a 143hp electric motyor, which delivers a combined maximum of 205hp. This could be the last update on the current-gen Camry, as the all-new next-gen model is already out internationally, and could come to India in the future.

Audi RS5 (Apr 11)

The hottest version of the A5, the second-generation RS5 Sports Coupè, has arrived with a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol motor that puts out 450hp and a humongous 600Nm of peak torque. The power figure matches the previous model’s, which got a 4.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8, however, the torque figure has increased by a whopping 170Nm. Mated to a an eight-speed automatic powering all-four wheels via Audi’s Quattro system, the engine helps achieve a claimed 0-100kph time of just 3.9sec. Coupé body style apart, an aggressive body kit and sportier detailing on the insides help differentiate the range-topper from the other A5s.
Price: Rs 1.1 crore (ex-showroom, India)

Volkswagen Ameo 1.0 (Apr 13)

As it had done with the Polo, Volkswagen has introduced the 76hp, three-cylinder, 1.0-litre petrol engine on the compact sedan, replacing the older 75hp, 1.2-litre motor. The 110hp, 1.5-litre diesel engine continues unchanged and still comes mated to either a five-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic unit. While the variant break-up is also unchanged, the brand did launch a Pace edition (as with the Polo 1.0) at Rs 6.10 lakh, which is a mid-spec, limited-run model based on the Comfortline trim that additionally gets 15-inch alloy wheels.

Mahindra XUV500 facelift (Apr 18)

The much-awaited facelift for the XUV500 has arrived with a raft of cosmetic changes on the outside and inside and more equipment on offer. While the 140hp, 2.2-litre petrol engine mated to a six-speed automatic is unchanged, the 2.2-litre diesel motor now puts out 155hp and 360Nm, up by 15hp and 30Nm. A six-speed manual is standard on the diesel thought an optional six-speed automatic is on offer with nearly every trim. Interestingly, the price of each equivalent variant has decreased compared to the older model.

BMW X3 (Apr 19)

The third-gen X3, which was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo, has launched with the same 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-diesel engine in the xDrive 20d as the last-gen model, which makes 190hp and 400Nm of peak torque. With an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel-drive standard, expect the luxury SUV to be more fuel-efficient and offer better performance and handling thanks to the new platform, that sees weight reduce by about 55kg over the outgoing model. The new X3 comes in two trims, xDrive 20d Expedition and xDrive 20d Luxury Line, with the latter getting more kit. More engine options, including a 248hp, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol in the xDrive30i, are expected to arrive at a later date.
Price: Rs 49.99-56.70 lakh (ex-showroom, India)

Toyota Yaris (April 25)

Toyota’s answer to the Honda City comes only with a single 107hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine that is mated to either a six-speed manual or a seven-step CVT automatic. All four trims get seven airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist as standard, along with features like keyless entry, a cooled glove box and a rear seat arm rest.
Price: Rs 8.75-14.07 lakh (ex-showroom, India)

Ford Freestyle (April 26)

Ford’s Figo-based cross-hatch debuts the new 96hp, 1.2-litre petrol engine and also gets a 100hp, 1.5-litre diesel motor. Both get a new five-speed manual gearbox, as well. Besides the typical styling cues associated with cross-hatchbacks, the Freestyle’s raised suspension gives it the requisite SUV-like looks. Even the base trim gets dual-front airbags and ABS, while the top-spec comes with six airbags and more safety kit.

MARCH

Tata Zest Premio Edition (Mar 5)

A special edition version of the Zest compact sedan, it was only available with the 75hp, 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced diesel engine. Slotting under the top-spec XT trim, the Premio Edition features black-finished outside mirrors, boot lid, hood strip and roof, and 15-inch wheels with silver covers; though a black boot spoiler is an optional extra. Two new exterior paint shades are also on offer – Titanium Grey and Platinum Silver. The interiors are exactly the same as the XM trim, including the Harman-sourced touchscreen infotainment system with navigation. A new seat fabric with contrast stitching and the Premio branding and a tan-finish on the centre of the dashboard, are now standard.

Volkswagen Polo 1.0 (Mar 9)

Volkswagen replaced the aging 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol motor on the Polo with a new 76hp, 1.0-litre petrol engine. Claimed to be more fuel-efficient and BS-VI-complaint, the new engine is lighter by about 18kg and is mated to a five-speed transmission. The hatchback is otherwise unchanged in any aspect – including its price. A special edition model called the Polo Pace was launched shortly after, on March 13. This was based on the mid-spec Comfortline trim. The addition of new 15-inch alloy wheels saw it priced at Rs 5.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), which still undercuts the standard Comfortline trim by Rs 11,700.

Ferrari 812 Superfast (Mar 12)

The most powerful series Ferrari yet has been brought to India to replace the F12 Berlinetta. It is powered by an 800hp, 6.5-litre, naturally-aspirated V12 petrol engine that is capable of propelling the GT to 100kph from standstill in 2.9sec and hit a top speed of 340kph. The 812 Superfast is also the first Ferrari to get an electric power steering (EPS). The EPS, along with rear-wheel steering, progressive traction control, Side Slip Control and a third-generation e-differential form some of the car's technical highlights.
Price: Rs 5.2 crore (ex-showroom, India).

Datsun Go, Go+ Remix Edition (Mar 12)

Special editions of the Go hatchback and Go+ MPV were introduced to help push sales of the Datsun models. Priced about Rs 9,000 and Rs 6,000 more than their respective higher-spec T trims, the limited-run models get cosmetic changes on the outside and a few tweaks in the cabin design. The kit is the same as the T variant – remote keyless entry, Bluetooth compatibility for the audio system, follow-me-home headlamps, an electric power steering, a manual AC, front power windows, auxiliary-in and USB ports, and central locking are on offer. Mechanically, both models are unchanged from their standard brethren and sport the same 68hp, 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
Price: Rs 4.21 lakh, Rs 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Maserati Ghibli (Mar 15)

The 2018 update to the Ghibli adds three trims – Diesel, GranSport and GranLusso, which can be differentiated by their exterior treatment. The higher-spec GranLusso and GranSport variants get new adaptive LED headlamps, Maserati’s Skyhook adaptive suspension system, and various driving assist systems. The same 275hp/600Nm, 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine (mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox) continues on all three trims. Maserati claims a 0-100kph time of 6.3sec, a top speed limited to 250kph, and an ARAI-tested fuel efficiency of 16.9kpl.

Jaguar XE, XF petrol (Mar 15)

The XE and XF get an engine upgrade and now feature Jaguar’s latest 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol Ingenium engines. Lower trims of the sedans (Pure and Prestige) feature a 200hp version of the engine while the top-spec Portfolio variants get 250hp. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic, as standard. While the starting price of the XE has marginally increased by Rs 14,000, the price of the XF petrol has come down by a whopping Rs 1.59 lakh. Otherwise, the both luxury sedans are unchanged on the outside, inside and in terms of equipment.

Honda WR-V Edge Edition (Mar 16)

This new mid-spec special edition variant for the WR-V is based on the base S trim, but gets more equipment. The exteriors see the addition of new five-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels. A premium white paint finish is also available for an additional Rs 4,000. Honda has also added rear parking sensors and integrated a rear-view camera display with the inside rear-view mirror of the model. Mechanically, there is no difference between the Edge Edition and the standard model. Both cars have the same 90hp, 1.2-litre petrol and 100hp, 1.5-litre diesel engines mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
Price: Rs 8.01-9.01 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado facelift (Mar 19)

The refreshed SUV has finally come to India after debuting in the country at the 2018 Auto Expo. The exteriors have been updated with a new hood, fenders, grille, projector headlamps and LED tail-lamps, along with a revised front and rear bumper design. The cabin now comes with a heavily updated dashboard, instruments and also a new 8.0-inch infotainment screen with panoramic view monitor that’s mounted low to improve outward visibility. It also gets heated and ventilated front seats. The same 3.0-litre diesel engine as the outgoing model is on offer. This motor makes 170hp and 410Nm of torque and is mated to a five-speed automatic gearbox. The four-wheel-drive system comes with three modes – comfort, normal and sport.
Price: Rs 92.60 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Ford EcoSport petrol Titanium+ (Mar 19)

A new top-spec petrol trim for the compact SUV shares its mechanicals (namely the 123hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine) with the other petrol variants, but gets more equipment. This includes 17-inch alloy wheels, projector headlamps with LED Daytime Running Lamps, cruise control, Ford’s Sync3 infotainment system with reverse camera, voice commands, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additional safety features include six airbags, ABS, EBD and Isofix seat anchors, as well.
Price: Rs 10.47 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Range Rover Evoque Convertible (Mar 27)

India’s first convertible luxury SUV, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible has arrived with JLR’s new 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol engine. In this application, it makes 240hp and 340Nm of peak torque, and comes mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels. It is available in a single, fully-loaded HSE Dynamic variant with features like adaptive LED headlights, head-up display, surround view camera, park assist (which includes parallel parking, parking exit and perpendicular parking assist) and a Wi-Fi hotspot as part of the InControl Touch Pro infotainment system. There’s also gesture control to open/close the tailgate. The fabric drop-top is operated electrically and can be tucked in the boot in about 20sec, while driving up to speeds of 48kph.

Tata Nexon XZ (Mar 27)

Available on both, the 110hp, 1.2-litre petrol and the 110hp, 1.5-litre diesel models, the new high-spec XZ trim slots just under the top-spec variant, hence it misses out on kit like a dual-tone roof, Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs), alloy wheels, front and a rear-centre armrests, 60:40 split-folding rear seats, front and rear fog lamps, a rear defogger, the smart-key and the push-start button. However, it does get projector headlamps, the Harman-sourced 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration and android auto connectivity; voice commands, voice alert feature (seatbelt, hand brake release, door open, low fuel and service reminder) and height adjust for the driver’s seat and the seatbelt.
Price: Rs 7.99-8.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

FEBRUARY

Renault Kwid Superhero Edition (Feb 5)

The second special edition Kwid launched this year, the Superhero Edition was a limited-run model meant to push sales of the hatchback. The French brand hoped the tie-up with Disney’s popular Marvel movie characters would help sales figures. Besides the cosmetic changes applied to the inside and outside to mimic the superheroes Captain America and Iron Man, the special edition is unchanged in any way and gets the same 68hp, 1.0-litre petrol engine and five-speed manual. The AMT version was not available on this edition. Equipment levels were on par with the top-spec RXT (O) trim and features as such as a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation are standard.
Price: Rs 4.34 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

BMW M5 (Feb 7)

BMW has just got the right blend of power and practicality in its high-performance sedan, the M5, which essentially is the performance-oriented iteration of the 5-series.

This latest F90 generation uses an updated version of the previous F10 M5’s 4.4-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine; but it’s been cranked up to 600hp and 750Nm of torque. Another difference from the previous car is that it now uses an eight-speed torque-converter automatic rather than the old seven-speed dual clutch unit. Also, while previous M5s have been rear-wheel-drive, this is the first one that comes with all-wheel drive as standard – which should seriously impact the way it drives on the limit.

BMW 6-series GT (Feb 7)

The successor to the 5-series GT has come to India in a single variant and one engine option. The 630i was launched at the Auto Expo with a 252hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. A 190hp, 2.0-litre diesel in the 620d and a 265hp, 3.0-litre, six-cylinder diesel in the 630d are expected at a later date. The model shares quite a bit with the 5-series sedan, from the platform to the interior bits. Equipment is also common including the touch-and-gesture-operated sixth-generation iDrive infotainment system, a head-up display, four-zone automatic climate control, LED mood lighting and a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System with a 10-channel amplifier with an output of 1,400 watts and 16 partially illuminated speakers.
Price: Rs 58.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Hyundai i20 (Feb 7)

The i20 got a mid-life update which was launched at the 2018 Auto Expo. With the facelift, Hyundai has brought the face of the premium hatch in line with its current family look by incorporating the cascading grille. At the rear, the license plate housing has now moved to the boot-door and the bumper and tail-lamps have been redesigned. On the inside, the changes are limited to a differently- patterned seat fabric, redesigned central AC vents, a rear seat armrest and Isofix seat mounts.

The facelift continues to source power from the 90hp, 1.4-litre, four-cylinder diesel motor and 83hp, 1.2-litre petrol unit. A five-speed manual is on offer with the former while the latter gets a six-speed manual. A CVT automatic is due in the coming months, but only on the 1.2 petrol model.

Mercedes-Maybach S 560, S 650 (Feb 7)

The premium luxury sedan market saw Mercedes’ flagship sedan enter the fray, with the S 560 and the S 650. Both the 469hp, 4.0-litre V8 engine and the 630hp, 6.0-litre V12 motor are already BS-VI-compliant but can also use our current BS-IV fuel – albeit with a penalty in emissions and efficiency. The S 650 is equipped with driver-assist features like a radar-based driving assistance system and 'Magic Body Control' that detects road undulations in advance. It also gets a new triple-torch design, multi-beam headlamps, new LED tail-lamps and advanced telematics. The rear is the highlight of the models and features a 'Magic Roof' with embedded lights mimicking a night sky and executive seats (with ventilated and get full-body-massage functions) that are standard with multiple adjustments for the backrest, seat-angle and height.
Price: Rs 1.94 crore, Rs 2.73 crore (ex-showroom, India).

Maruti Suzuki Swift (Feb 8)

Launched in 12 trims and with two engine and transmission options, the third-gen Swift is underpinned by the Heartect platform, shared with the Ignis, Baleno and Dzire. The engine options are the same as well, with the 83hp, 1.2-litre petrol engine and the 75hp, 1.3-litre diesel motor. A five-speed manual is standard, but a five-speed AMT is also on offer. However, the top-spec Z+ variants are manual-only. Equipment on the top-spec version include LED projector headlamps and Daytime Running Lamps, a reverse parking camera and a 7.0-inch Smartplay touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. However, even the base L trims get kit like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, and Isofix child seat mounts.
Price: Rs 4.99-8.29 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

BMW M3, M4 (Feb 9)

Costing about Rs 4 lakh more than the previous model, the refreshed M3 and M4 get minor tweaking on the outside such as the new adaptive LED headlamps and tail-lamps. The Competition Pack, which is now standard, brings with it exhaust pipes finished in black, a carbon roof and gloss paint finish. The 19-inch alloys, shod in 255/35 R19 front and 275/35 R19 rear tyres, are standard, though 20-inch ones, with 265/30 R20 front and 285/35 R20 rear rubber, are on the list of options.

The Competition Pack also adds a small bump up in power. The 3.0-litre, in-line six-cylinder turbo-petrol mill makes 450hp (up by 19hp) while torque is the same 550Nm. Just as before, the engine transfers power to the rear wheels via a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
Price: Rs 1.30 crore, Rs 1.33 crore (ex-showroom, India).

BMW X6 35i (Feb 9)

BMW added a petrol variant to its X6 line-up in India, which only had a single diesel model, earlier. The X6 35i, also available in a single top-spec M Sport trim, is powered by a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, turbocharged unit that makes 306hp and 400Nm of torque, which is sent to all-four wheels via an eight-speed automatic. It also gets the same level of equipment as the diesel X6 40d including a 10.25-inch display for the instrument cluster, a touchscreen infotainment system with iDrive connectivity, two 9.2-inch entertainment screens at the rear that are controllable via remote and a 600W, 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
Price: Rs 94.15 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

Porsche 911 GT3 RS (Feb 21)

The even more hardcore version of the 911 GT3, badged as the RS, gets a 20hp more powerful 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine, which now produces 520hp and 460Nm of torque. The model comes with a raft of modifications to make it even more track-ready; such as massive amounts of weight reduction on the inside, new carbon-fibre aero kit and optional packs to bring weight down, even more. A total of 29kg can be saved if the optional Weissach Pack is specced, over the 1,460kg ‘standard’ 911 GT3, which retails for about Rs 44 lakh less than the RS.
Price: Rs 2.75 crore (ex-showroom, India).

Rolls-Royce Phantom (Feb 23)

Claiming the title of most expensive car on sale in India, the Phantom comes in standard and long-wheelbase formats. Both are powered by a 6.75-litre, twin-turbo, V12 petrol motor that churns out 571hp and 900Nm of peak torque, which is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The opulent flagship sedan boasts a high level of bespoke customisation options, the highlight of which is the Gallery – a single piece of fixed glass that spans the width of dashboard and is a customisable canvas on which its ultra-rich owners can commission art of their favourite artists or choose from the composition that Rolls-Royce offers. Other creature comforts include the Starlight roof, that can be set to replicate a night sky, a champagne chiller and flutes, buttons to open and close the doors and, of course, extensive use of sound deadening in a bid to make this the quietest car in the world.

Mercedes-Benz S 350d, S 450 (Feb 26)

The facelift for the S-class doesn’t just get more kit and some styling changes inside and out. The highlight on the S 350d is the new 3.0-litre, in-line, six-cylinder, diesel engine that is BS-VI compliant, even on poorer grade BS-IV fuel. The engine is tuned to produce 286hp and 600Nm of peak torque and is mated to a new nine-speed automatic gearbox. The S 450 is also on offer with a 367hp/500Nm, 3.0-litre, V6 petrol engine, mated to a nine-speed auto ‘box. The insides see the inclusion of a new, horizontally elongated, 12.3-inch touchscreen unit, a new leather and wood trim option for the inlays, new seats sides, a new fragrance and 64 ambient lighting options. Moreover, ventilated seats with a massage function and four-zone climate control continue to compliment the luxury quotient of the S-class.

Renault Kwid Live For More Reloaded 2018 Edition (Jan 6)

The first launch new car launched in 2018, the special edition Kwid has a rather long name. Like earlier special edition models, this limited-run hatchback sported a new-look sticker job and had an important safety feature added – rear parking sensors – which were not on offer previously. Available on the 54hp, 0.8-litre and 68hp, 1.0-litre engines, the Live For More Reloaded 2018 Edition also came on the 1.0-litre AMT version.
Price: Rs 2.67-3.88 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Hyundai Verna 1.4 (Jan 10)

The base version of the new Verna mid-size sedan was introduced with the 100hp/132Nm, 1.4-litre petrol engine. It is available in only two trims – E and EX. The former gets equipment like body coloured bumpers, turn indicators on outside mirrors (electrically foldable), cooled glove box and tilt steering, while the latter also comes with reverse parking sensors, fog lamps, automatic headlamps, height adjustable driver seat, 5.0-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and USB, steering-mounted audio controls and cruise control.
Price: Rs 7.80-9.10 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Volvo XC90 (Jan 10)

Volvo silently updated the XC90 loading all the three trims of the D5 variant with kits. The base Momentum trim is now equipped with heated front seats, paddleshifters, adaptive cruise control and a park-assist system. The higher-spec variants now get blind spot monitoring along with cross traffic alert, rear collision mitigation, a 360-degree camera and heated steering. The R-design variant gets different detailing on outside mirrors, window sills, gear lever and remote control.

However, the workhorse of the XC60 D5 remains the same 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel motor producing 235hp and 480Nm of peak torque, which is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with an all-wheel-drive system.

Lamborghini Urus (Jan 11)

Lamborghini’s super SUV was launched in January and is based on Volkswagen’s MLB Evo platform. It shares its underpinning with the Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne, and the Audi Q7. Performing under the hood of the Urus is a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 petrol engine that churns out 650hp and 850Nm of peak torque and is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Urus takes 3.6 seconds to clock 100kph from still and can hit a top-speed of 305kph.

The Urus is equipped with active torque vectoring, rear-wheel steering system, active air suspension and cylinder deactivation that help to optimize fuel efficiency. The Urus also gets six drive modes- Strada, Sport, Corsa, Neve and Terra along with Ego, a completely customisable mode.
Price: Rs 3 crore (ex-showroom, India).

Isuzu D-Max V-Cross (Jan 15)

The refreshed D-Max V-Cross lifestyle pick-up was launched in two variants - V-Cross and V-Cross High. Under the bonnet, it retains the 2.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-diesel engine that produces 136hp and 320Nm of peak torque. This motor is mated to a five-speed manual transmission that sends power to all-four wheels. The outside of the facelift gets minor tweaking over the previous model, while inside the cabin, Isuzu has added a new touchscreen audio system. The top-variant is also equipped with a six-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, black leather seats and a multi-functional steering wheel with cruise control. The safety kit also sees the addition of electronic stability control and traction control.
Price: Rs 14.27-15.77 lakh (ex-showroom, Chennai).

Lexus LS 500h (Jan 15)

The Lexus flagship sedan is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 petrol motor combined with two electric motors, which in combination produces 359hp and 350Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to an e-CVT gearbox that powers only the rear wheels. Lexus’ new design signature – the oversized hourglass-shaped grille makes the model look quite distinct. On the inside, the LS 500h gets multiple screens, ventilated seats with a massage function, 28-way electrically adjustable front seats, and the rear seats that can recline up to 48 degrees. The car is also equipped with active noise cancellation to make the cabin quieter.
Price: Rs 1.77-1.93 crore (ex-showroom, India).

Range Rover Evoque Landmark Edition (Jan 16)

The Evoque has been around for six years in India and now Land Rover has added a special ‘Landmark Edition’ to the range. On the outside, it gets new gloss-black 18-inch alloy wheels, a new body kit and body-coloured lower door cladding, which helps it to distinguish itself from the regular model. Audi Q5 (Jan 18)
The previous Q5 had concealed Audi’s grip on the mid-size premium SUV segment but with more totter and propounded offerings from its rivals; had started looking dated. The new Q5 is powered by a 190hp, 2.0-litre, four cylinder diesel engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox coupled with the Quattro all-wheel drive system. A plusher cabin and up-market features like Audi’s virtual cockpit, MMI infotainment system, wireless charging and adaptive suspension with damping control gives the Q5 credentials to stand tall against rivals.
Price: Rs 53.25-57.60 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

Range Rover Velar (Jan 20)

Launched with a whopping 25 variants to choose from, Land Rover’s road-focused SUV, the Velar comes with three engine options – a 179hp, 2.0-litre diesel, a 250hp, 2.0-litre petrol and a 300hp, 3.0-litre V6 diesel motor. The former two get seven trims each while the latter additionally gets a top-spec First Edition variant. The petrol engine on the Velar is the first of JLR’s new Ingenium petrol engines to come to India. Despite being called a road-focused model, the five-seat SUV gets off-road technology such as Hill Descent Control (HDC) as standard, the Terrain Response 2 system and an active rear-locking e-differential.
Price: Rs 80.92 lakh-Rs 1.41 crore (ex-showroom, India).

Datsun Redigo AMT (Jan 23)

Datsun launched the Redigo AMT in January in two trims - T (O) and S. The five-speed AMT gearbox is offered only in the 1.0-litre iteration which is powered by a 999cc, three-cylinder, petrol motor that produces 68hp and 91Nm of torque. Similar to other AMT equipped models, the Redigo’s transmission is also a sequential shift unit like the one seen on the Kwid AMT but also gets a creep function in addition, called the ‘Rush Hour’ mode.
Price: Rs 3.81-3.96 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Maserati Levante  (Jan 30)

Maserati launched its first SUV, the Levante, in three trims, base, the luxuriously appointed GranLusso variant and the GranSport trim, which offers a sportier exterior and interior specification. While the Maserati looks radical for an SUV thanks to its curvy shape, its large dimensions leave no doubt that it is one. It’s just over five metres long and has a wheelbase of a tad more than three metres. Under its long hood, the Levante has a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine that produces 275hp and 600Nm of peak torque. The motor is mated to an eight-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox with a 4WD drive system. It takes a claimed 6.85sec to clock triple digit speeds from rest and has a claimed top speed of 230kph.
Price: Rs 1.45-1.54 crore (ex-showroom, India).
Competition: Porsche Cayenne
