Soon, separate toll lanes for VIPs and judges

According to PTI, the Madras High Court has directed the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to start providing a separate lane at toll plazas for VIPs and sitting judges across India. This decision was made by the high court to curtail the unnecessary harassment and delays faced by VIPs and judges at toll plazas, as per the report.

A bench comprising of Justices Huluvadi G Ramesh and MV Muralidharan passed the interim order directing the NHAI to issue the circular to all toll plazas across the country. The circular orders them to provide a separate lane so that vehicles of VIPs and sitting judges can pass through without any hindrance.

The High Court has also warned that they would issue a show cause notice to the concerned authorities unless the circular was issued and that any violation of the order would be viewed seriously.

Infiniti Prototype 10 concept previews electrification plans

Infiniti has shown its Prototype 10 Concept, which it describes as a “physical manifestation of Infiniti’s creative and ambitious plans for electrified performance”.

The speedster concept, powered by an electrified powertrain, signposts Infiniti’s intentions to be an electric-only brand from 2021, adopting a variety of powertrains developed under parent company Nissan. It's the second retro-inspired concept after the Prototype 9, which evoked Formula 1 racers of the past.

It’s a roofless single-seater, with the motor at the rear and cooled by large vents behind the driver’s seat and where the passenger seat would be. Only the driver's seat, four-point harness, pedals and smaller diameter steering wheel adorn the interior. Steering by wire eliminates the need for a steering column; instead, the wheel is fixed to carbon-fibre struts that emerge directly out of the car’s bodywork. Its design builds on that of the Q Inspiration concept saloon, which was revealed at the Detroit motor show earlier this year.

The Prototype 10’s simplicity reflects the flexibility available when designing cars with electrified powertrains, says the brand’s new executive design director, Karim Habib. The car will never make production, however, given the tiny market for single-seat track cars and Infiniti’s relatively low sales in Europe, but the brand’s future range of sports cars, saloons and SUVs will be made using the car’s design language, with different electrified powertrains depending on the model.

Pure-electric cars will be made, as will range extender-equipped ones designed for longer journeys; no external charger is needed, and all the power is generated by the petrol range extender, developed by Nissan as the e-Power system. Performance hybrids are also on the way, capitalising on the performance benefits of plug-in hybrid systems. An electric four-wheel drive system is confirmed for eventual production. These will all sit inside flat-floored modular architecture to boost packaging benefits, which will be introduced on its electrified cars in 2021.

The car’s design, which draws heavily from early California speedsters of the mid-20th century, was overseen by Infiniti’s design centre in Kanagawa, designed virtually in the UK and built in the US. Under development, the car’s simple shape and the fact that only the driver’s head can be seen when sitting behind the wheel led the development team to dub the car ‘The Bathtub’. The driver’s seat was mounted as low as possible to keep the car’s centre of gravity close to the ground.

Infiniti’s renewed ethos means that its cars will be designed to have better driving dynamics than current models, as well as being more powerful and efficient as the brand makes the most of the performance benefits of electric power. Habib said: “The Prototype 10 echoes the layout and design of early speedsters. This period saw the creation of some of the most evocative car designs of all time, where power was celebrated through high-powered single-seat competition cars, were characterised by the simple love of driving.”

Mercedes-Benz C-class facelift launch on September 28

It was only at the Geneva motor show earlier this year that Mercedes-Benz unveiled the mid-life update for the C-class, and now, less than seven months later, the India launch is all set to take place on September 28, 2018.

From the outside, it's very much like the C-class we have come to know so well, save for a few tweaks to the bumpers and new designs for the alloy wheels. New on the C-class facelift are two variations of all-LED headlights, and the tail-lights that sport a new LED pattern. On the inside, additions could include a 12.3-inch digital instrument console, a 10.25-inch high-resolution screen for the COMAND infotainment system and also the new-design steering wheel, which gets the dual touchpad control system we’ve seen on the E-class and S-class facelift.

The changes sound minor at first, but Mercedes has made an effort to make this refresh a significant one, and it's the new and updated engines that are the bigger news with the C-class facelift. The range is likely to start with the C 200, but instead of the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol motor as in the current car, it'll come with a new, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine. The downsizing, thankfully, hasn't resulted in a drop in power output, with the smaller engine putting out a similar 184hp as the 2.0-litre, and 280Nm of torque, just 20Nm down on the outgoing engine.

The diesel will be the all-new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder unit that was first introduced on the E 220d, but just like with the pre-facelift C-class, it'll be available in two states of tune. The C 220d will mirror the E 220d's 194hp and 400Nm, while the twin-turbo C 250d will be replaced by a C 300d, a twin-turbo version of the 2.0-litre OM654, which will produce close to 245hp! Both diesel engines will be BS-VI-compliant. Additionally, all variants of the C-class facelift will get the new, 9-speed, 9G-Tronic auto 'box, which replaces the old 7G-Tronic unit.

The C-class facelift is likely to cost a lakh or two more than the outgoing model. We expect the C 200 to be priced at Rs 41 lakh, and the C 300d to be priced at Rs 47 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). As we count down the days to the launch, you can read our review of the C-class facelift here.

Next-gen Hyundai Grand i10 takes shape

As reported earlier, Hyundai is gearing up to introduce the new AH2 hatchback sometime in October. The company has already begun road-testing for two of its upcoming products that will hit the showrooms in the future. The sub-Creta (Carlnio-based) SUV was spied recently and now, fresh spy shots of Hyundai’s all-new Swift rival, a replacement for the Grand i10 hatchback, have emerged on the internet. The next-gen Hyundai Grand i10 is likely to make a global debut sometime next year.

A first glance at the test mule one would easily pass off as the camouflaged vehicle for the AH2 tall-boy hatch (which is set to revive the Santro nameplate), however a close look reveals that this car is wider and longer. For those who don’t know, the current-gen Grand i10 for India is 40mm longer than the model sold internationally. The test-mule spied looks almost as long as the India-spec car, which means Hyundai could create just one model for the global market with added focus on rear legroom and backseat comfort.

In terms of design, the next-gen Grand i10 is said to borrow a lot of design cues from the upcoming Hyundai Elantra facelift. A hexagonal front grille and wider headlamps and tail-lamps are two of the exterior design features expected on the hatchback. The current Grand i10 is already feature-packed but expect Hyundai to add more kit to the 2019 model.

The Grand i10’s main competitor, the Maruti Suzuki Swift, is available with an AMT gearbox on both petrol and diesel variants. With Hyundai India set to launch the next-gen Santro with an AMT option, expect the 2019 Grand i10 to feature this gearbox as well, at least in India.

Currently, the Grand i10 comes with an 83hp, 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, which is mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox. There is also a 71hp, three-cylinder turbo-diesel motor that is available with only a 5-speed manual gearbox.

An India launch for the next-gen model is still some time away.

Vehicles older than 15 years to be scrapped per new gov. policy

The Delhi government has revealed new guidelines for scrapping of vehicles in the National Captial Region. Called the Guidelines for Scrapping of Motor Vehicles in Delhi, 2018, the notification states that petrol, CNG and diesel vehicles that are older than 15 years and are found plying on the roads, parked in a public place, or abandoned will be scrapped. The registered owner of the vehicle will be given the scrap value of the model.

However, the policy also states that when it comes to petrol and CNG cars, if they are parked in a private space and can furnish adequate proof, then they will not be impounded.

The policy also provides environmental and procedural guidelines for the government-run scrappage yards including battery disposal, re-using and recycling of parts and dealing with the separation and storage of all automobile-related liquids and metals.

8 most expensive cars on sale in India

What a week it’s been for expensive cars. Bugatti took the wraps off the Divo that costs 5 million Euros (Rs 40 crore), while just a day later a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO went for 48.4 million dollars (Rs 340 crore) making it the most expensive car ever sold at auction. This got us thinking of the most expensive cars on sale in India today. Prepare to feel small.

A disclaimer first: The prices listed here are base ex-showroom prices. Each model comes with an extensive (and extremely costly) list of options that makes them even more expensive.

8. Rolls-Royce Ghost Rs 4.3-4.9 crore

An entry point to the Rolls-Royce family it may be but the Ghost is still a Rolls-Royce through and through. Its 570hp, V12 engine and surprising level of waftability make the Ghost quite enjoyable to drive as well.

7. Rolls-Royce Wraith Rs 4.60 crore

The Wraith is Rolls-Royce’s idea of a sporty coupe. The four-seater is every bit as luxurious and refined as its more sedate stable-mates, but is far more exciting and dynamic, thanks to the 632hp, 6.6-litre V12 motor that propels this 2,360kg car to 100kph in just 4.4 seconds.

6. Lamborghini Aventador S Rs 5.01 crore

The Aventador follows in the footsteps of barking mad V12 Lambos. The 740hp motor is nothing short of epic, and the S version brings with it four-wheel steer, which adds a level of agility that was previously lacking. It’s hugely impractical for our roads but also offers an experience like few others.

5. Ferrari GTC4Lusso V12 Rs 5.20 crore

Like the Ferrari FF that came before, the GTC4Lusso isn’t a traditional Ferrari in look. The shooting brake body style divides opinion but does create space for four inside the cabin. While the base 610hp V8 Lusso T (Rs 4.2 crore) is ballistic, the full-blown 690hp V12 is the one to splurge on.

4. Ferrari 812 Superfast Rs 5.20 crore

The 812 Superfast perfectly blends a Ferrari supercar and a Ferrari GT in one incredible package. Its 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 motor pumps out a whopping 800hp and 718Nm, that goes solely to the rear wheels. It’s extreme but oh-so-desirable.

3. Rolls-Royce Dawn Rs 6.25 crore

Opulence and open-top motoring, that’s what the Rolls-Royce Dawn is all about. Claimed to be the quietest convertible on sale in the world, the drop-top is as refined as its roofed stable-mates. It shares its 632hp, 6.6-litre V12 powerplant with the Wraith, which provides a bucket-load of entertainment for a 2,560kg car.

2. Bentley Mulsanne Speed Rs 6.90 crore

The embodiment of everything Bentley stands for, the Mulsanne comes in two versions – the standard 512hp model (Rs 5.53 crore) and the even faster and (pricier) 537hp Speed model. Both share the same 6.8-litre V8, with the engine producing a locomotive-like 1100Nm in the Speed.

1. Rolls-Royce Phantom Rs 9.50-11.35 crore

Currently the most expensive car in India, (the standard model costs Rs 9.50 crore while the long-wheelbase version will set you back an extravagant Rs 11.35 crore), the eighth-gen Phantom melds grandeur and technology like no other car. It is the ultimate in luxury motoring.

Honourable mentions

2011 Maybach 57/62 Rs 4.85-5.10 crore (at launch)

Mercedes’ answer to Rolls-Royce and Bentley, the Maybach was the luxury car of its time. Standard wheelbase 57 S too small for you? You could have the extended wheelbase 62 model that featured every conceivable luxury. But of course, power came from V12 engines.

2016 Audi A8 L Security Rs 9.15 crore (at launch)

The A8 L Security could take a barrage of 7.62x51mm rifle rounds and could also be optioned with its own oxygen system. Power came from a monster of a W12 engine; just what you need to get out of a dangerous situation, fast.

2016 Mercedes S 600 Guard Rs 10.5 crore (at launch)

Mercedes took the ‘built like a tank’ axiom a bit too seriously with this one. The S 600 Guard was reinforced to such a degree that it could withstand a blast of 15kg worth of TNT at a distance of just two metres. Safest car in the world? Maybe.

2011 Koenigsegg Agera Rs 12.5 crore (at launch)

Believe it or not but the Koenigsegg Agera had an India launch, though there’s no confirmation of the model ever finding a buyer in India. Built to order, the Swedish rocket came powered by a 5.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 that made 940hp and 1100Nm of peak torque. 0-100kph time, you ask? 2.8secs!

2010 Bugatti Veyron Rs 16 crore (at launch)

Of course, a Bugatti had to top the list. The Veyron was launched in India in 2010 for the royal sum of Rs 16 crore. It’s not known if anyone bought it in India but what is known is that it was the fastest and most powerful car of its time. Its 8.0-litre W16 engine made 1001hp and propelled the car to 407kph!

If you had to pick just one, which of these cars would you have in your dream garage? Let us know in the comments section below.

2019 Honda NSX gets chassis upgrades

Honda has refreshed the NSX supercar for 2019, with a series of tweaks to the chassis and hybrid powertrain aimed at improving handling, comfort and emissions. The anti-roll bars at the front and rear have been stiffened, by 26 percent and 19 percent respectively, while Honda has also stiffened the rear hubs and control-arm toe link bushings.

Software revisions for the hybrid powertrain and adaptive dampers, as well as the power steering and stability control system are aimed at making the car easier to live with. Exclusive tyres - Continental SportContact 6s - were developed specifically for the NSX and are now standard fit. These improve response and feel during acceleration, braking and cornering. These improvements, combined with a more responsive throttle, have contributed to a lap time improvement of two seconds around the Suzuka circuit over the pre-facelift version.

To meet Euro 6d-TEMP emissions requirements, the NSX is now also fitted with a particulate filter, in addition to turbocharger tweaks. The pre-facelift NSX produces 573bhp from its 3.5-litre hybrid V6, with 645Nm of torque and four-wheel drive, helping the car hit 100kph in 2.9sec and go on to a top speed of 307kph.

Mahindra Marazzo ready for September 3 launch

New, exclusive spy images of Mahindra’s Marazzo MPV, scheduled to launch in India on September 3, 2018, show various exterior and interior details for the first time. The spied model is the higher-spec M8 variant.

The ‘shark-inspired’ grille takes a dominant position on the nose of the new Marazzo. The headlamps, which feature LEDs, are similar to those found on the XUV500, though the triangular fog lamp clusters (with LEDs) are unique. The large rear window gets a wiper and is bounded by a chrome strip at the bottom (below which is the housing for the number plate), which connects the C-shaped LED tail-lamps. The LED lights are only expected to be offered on the higher-spec trims; 17-inch black-finished alloy wheels are also on offer with this top-spec trim.

The cabin area of the Marazzo M8 sees the introduction of a digital instrument cluster, a 7.0-inch (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible) touchscreen infotainment system mounted on the centre console and an automatic AC unit. The steering wheel has buttons for the infotainment system on the right and for cruise control on the left. The dashboard gets a dual-tone gloss black and beige finish. All three rows of the MPV, which will be available in seven- and eight-seat configurations, get roof-mounted AC vents.

The Marazzo is powered by a new 1.5-litre diesel engine that makes 130hp and 300Nm of torque, and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, as the spy images show.

Mahindra dealers have unofficially started accepting bookings for an amount of Rs 10,000. The MPV will rival the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (Rs 6.34-10.69 lakh) (the second-gen model is arriving soon) and the Toyota Innova Crysta (Rs 14.34-21.57 lakh), and will be priced between the two.

All prices, ex-showroom, Delhi

Mahindra appeals to US courts to stop FCA from proceeding in Roxor case

On August 1, 2018, Fiat Chrysler Automobile US filed a complaint with the United States International Trade Commission to prevent Mahindra & Mahindra from exporting parts for the Roxor and Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA). The Indian manufacturer says that it has taken action within the ITC as well as in the Federal District Court, USA to prevent Fiat from proceeding in the matter.

FCA claims that the Roxor (an SUV based on the Mahindra Thar) has certain design features that infringe the intellectual property rights of dispute/ litigation – Fiat's Jeep design, since the Roxor was modelled after the original Willys Jeep.

M&M has stated that the case is without merit. On August 22, 2018, the company filed a Public Interest Statement with the ITC expressing its position on this matter and explained how it is in the public interest for the ITC to rule against Fiat, in favour of Mahindra.

An M&M statement issued today says, “Our goals on the public interest statement were two-fold. One was to state our position on the merits and the other was to correct inaccuracies regarding Mahindra as a company and the Roxor as a product. We set the record straight on the history of Mahindra, including its US operations. We also demonstrated that the Roxor is a vehicle that was always intended only as off-road, does not compete with Fiat vehicles, is manufactured and assembled in the first OEM plant to be built in Michigan in the last 25 years, was the result of more than three years of research and development, and categorically rejected the notion that the Roxor was an imported, low-quality "knock-off" kit car."

On August 23, 2018, Mahindra filed a complaint with the Federal Court in Michigan on the issue of the applicability and enforcement of its 2009 agreement with Fiat. The company says, “We are asking the court to block Fiat from participating in the ITC claim – an injunction – because of the fact that they agreed in 2009 to never bring such claims if we use a grille that they approved. The Roxor uses that grille. We are also arguing that Fiat is using the ITC case to harm our Roxor business by creating negative publicity, damaging our reputation and our stature in the marketplace.”

Meanwhile, M&M and MANA have commenced proceedings at the Federal District Court in Michigan to enforce the Grille Design Agreement executed between M&M and Fiat in 2009 and seek an injunction against Fiat from proceeding with the ITC complaint it has filed.

According to M&M, “From the reading of the filing of Fiat, they have sought an order implications, if any, due to for permanently restraining the company from exporting, and compensation, penalty etc; MANA from importing, any parts or components which are infringing upon Fiat's intellectual property rights in to the US. There is no monetary claim such as compensation, damages, etc. sought by them. However, if they succeed in getting a permanent injunction from the company exporting infringing parts or components to the US and MANA importing the same in to the US, the company will not be able to sell such parts or components to the US and the sale of such parts or components by the company to MANA will be affected.”

Volkswagen introduces 7-year/1,25,000km add-on warranty

Volkswagen has introduced an add-on warranty program for all its cars to be covered for up to seven years (or 1,25,000km) in an attempt to ease the ownership experience. The company offers a 3-, 4- and 5-year extended warranty over the standard warranty of two years.

The add-on warranty of 1 year/20,000km can be taken anytime from the next day of expiry of new car’s warranty or used car extended warranty. However, the car must be run for less than 1,25,000km and should be within 7 years from the vehicle's purchase date. The add-on warranty can be availed within 30 days before the expiry of the valid warranty or up to 15 days post the expiry of the warranty.

It is worth noting that Taxi/commercial registration vehicles cannot opt for the add-on warranty package. Also, only the cars that have undergone scheduled services at a Volkswagen authorized dealer and have a proper record in the service history log are eligible for the add-on warranty. In case of change of the vehicle's ownership, the remaining add-on warranty period/km would be transferred to the new owner. However, a maximum of two ownership changes are allowed to avail the warranty transfer.

The add-on warranty covers a list of components of the engine, manual or automatic gearbox, suspension and steering, braking system, fuel system, diesel-injection system, air-conditioning system, electrical systems and oil seals. Do keep in mind that the add-on warranty is a slightly curtailed version of new car / extended warranty and may not include some of the parts covered under the regular warranty.

In the Indian market, most manufacturers cover their vehicle for 7 years with extended warranty packages. Some manufacturers like Toyota and Hyundai even have extended warranty packages for up to 8 years for its cars.

New Renault Arkana revealed at 2018 Moscow motor show

Renault has revealed its new Arkana SUV, a coupe-styled SUV that will be the French brand’s flagship for that market when it is introduced.

The five-seat Arkana shares much of its design cues with the Captur, though with edgier styling like the LED headlamps taken from the likes of the new Megane. The sloping roofline at the rear integrates well with the boot, making the Arkana look more like a high-riding crossover. This look is father enhanced by  large 19-inch alloy wheels and a high ground clearance. The rear features two exhaust pipes at the bottom of the bumper and a full width LED tail-lamp strip. Renault’s design boss Laurens Van den Acker said it strikes “a balance between the elegance of a sedan and the powerful stance of an SUV.”

The platform of the Arkana is a reworked version of the same unit found on the Russia-spec Duster and Captur (sold there as the Kaptur). While details have not been revealed yet, it may also share engine options with those cars for that market. A tech detail that has been confirmed is that all-wheel-drive will be on offer with the SUV.

After being introduced in Russia early next year, the SUV will go on sale in Asian markets, though it is unlikely that Renault will bring the Arkana to India. The Captur hasn’t been the sales spinner the French carmaker had hoped for as Indian buyers prefer a traditional, upright stance on their SUVs, rather than the stylish-looking Renault. The coupe-like roofline on the Arkana may not make the same impact its is expected to get in other markets.

Hyundai Carlino-based compact SUV spied in India

Hyundai’s Carlino-based compact SUV has been spied testing in India for the first time. As we had reported earlier, the rival to the Tata Nexon and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza is scheduled to arrive in the second half of 2019. The model had also been spied testing in South Korean at the beginning of this month.

The model that has been spotted here reveals some of the compact SUV’s exterior details. Interestingly, the SUV on test retains only few elements of the Carlino concept displayed at the 2016 Auto Expo. The front grille looks is a variation of Hyundai’s new-age cascading grille, while the split and almost Kona-like headlamps are new. The top headlamps get LED DRLs with the ones positioned lower down serving as the main headlamp unit. The front bumper, which melds with the flared wheel arches, also features a silver skid plate at the bottom.

The new compact SUV does look like a scaled down Creta in silhouette, and what strengthens the link is the angular glass house and thick C-pillar. Images of the compact SUVs rear end are too camouflaged to reveal any pertinent details.

While final specification of the Hyundai compact SUV is not known as yet, we can confirm the model will be available with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine as well as a new 1.5-litre diesel engine. The 118hp, turbo-petrol engine already powers the i20 in markets abroad and as Hyundai insiders put it, has been selected for its “strong mid-range torque that will be essential on the compact SUV”. The diesel engine on offer will be Hyundai’s next-gen 1.5-litre unit that will be BS-VI emission norms compliant from day one. We have learnt that power and torque figures for the new diesel engine will be 115p and 250Nm, respectively.  Keeping with Hyundai’s trend to offer a little bit of premium for a little bit of premium, expect pricing in the range of Rs 7-12 lakh bracket.

The compact SUV aside, Hyundai is also considering a micro SUV for India. In the coming months, Hyundai will launch a new budget hatchback (codename AH2) and will also bring in the Kona Electric SUV in 2019.

Review: 2017 Renault Kwid long term review, final report

This Outback Bronze Renault Kwid has been the smallest long-termer in the Autocar India fleet for almost 18 months, and my experience with it has been a mix of highs and lows.

Mind you, I’m no stranger to the Kwid as I spent quite a bit of time with the 800cc version that was also part of our fleet. Additionally, Autocar India drove all the way from Delhi to Paris – a challenging 17,000km – in the upgraded Kwid 1.0 and that impressed me greatly.

My daily commute to work is a 12km drive, one-way, and it’s littered with traffic lights and Mumbai’s infamous potholes. The Kwid 1.0 weighs just about 700kg, and this coupled with the more powerful 68hp motor did help make things a little peppier. Also, the car is quicker than its 800cc counterpart, which meant I could enjoy small bursts of speed between traffic lights, especially while driving on the four-lane Kidwai road in Wadala. The 1.0-litre engine is not as peppy as, say, Maruti’s K10 motor, but it does the job decently. Press the accelerator a bit harder while trying to make a move swiftly once the light turns green, and you do get an occasional wheel-spin, but this did add a bit of fun to my otherwise uneventful commute. All this sounds exciting to some extent and the Kwid is a good vehicle to drive in city traffic. Also, the Kwid 1.0’s clutch stayed light throughout its time with us.

What I really liked about the Kwid was that its headlamps had a good throw, which was useful on dimly lit roads. The slightly high placement of the fog lamps also did a great job in lighting up corners. Also worth a mention is the massive 300-litre boot which was of great help during multiple airport runs. And given the car’s overall small footprint, its luggage-holding capacity did surprise many in my family.

Our chief photographer Ashley also used the Kwid for a short while and he loved the engine. He felt it did a great job of puttering about in lower gears, especially in first; he found that the engine didn’t stall – even when he took off his foot from the accelerator at 5kph.

We covered close to 17,000km in the Kwid, and it’s good that in all this time, the car’s ride quality remained unchanged. The suspension absorbed almost everything that was thrown at it and at any speed. At times, it did send in a thump or two, but that was only when the potholes were larger than what its puny 13-inch wheels could handle. Even on the slightly bad patches, I could drive easily without any of the bumps filtering through as the Kwid’s suspension took it all in its stride. The Kwid’s brakes did a decent job throughout, with some fade experienced only in the last 500km.

As far as fuel economy goes, we did notice it actually getting better as the car clocked more kilometres. Ashley managed to squeeze out over 15kpl in the city and around 22.7kpl on the highways during his long-distance commutes, while I was only able to get a high of 12.7kpl in the city, thanks to frequent stops and Mumbai’s slow-moving traffic.

The Kwid’s USP has been its touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth; this is still not offered by any rivals in its class. The Bluetooth worked flawlessly and the USB interface was smooth as well. However, the sound quality from the speakers is a bit low and a speaker upgrade is highly recommended. My biggest grouse is that the Kwid comes with a single wiper at the front; this leaves about five inches of the windscreen unwiped, and with the slightly thick A-pillar, visibility is affected. And the lack of a wiper at the back further hampers visibility.

Another unnerving issue I faced was that the accelerator pedal failed to revert to its original position quite a few times. The vehicle was sent to the service centre after a warning light showed up indicating a faulty accelerator sensor, and this was fixed by replacing the accelerator pedal and the sensor. Upon further investigation, we found this was a problem seen on many Kwids, which Renault has been addressing on a case-by-case basis. Also, the car used to stall at times without any warning and at any speed, resulting in some highly stressful situations. The other niggles that cropped up included a cabin light that didn’t work via the switch (it only lit up when the door was opened) and some rattling from the driver-side window.

The Renault Kwid has been a part of my life ever since the 800cc model joined our fleet, and now after using the more powerful 1.0-litre car for over a year, its good bits – the great ride quality, the practicality it offers and the spacious boot – take precedence over the few issues I faced. All in all, the Kwid 1.0 is a decent option to consider if you’re looking for a city car.

Porsche Project Gold is one-off restomod 993 Turbo S

Porsche has revealed a one-off 993 Turbo, built from an original bodyshell using all-new parts from its Porsche Classic division. The car's reveal comes ahead of its official premiere at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca circuit in California next month. Project Gold – officially a 993-generation 911 Turbo S badged ‘Classic Series’ – is a one-off, track-only restomod, in which the bodyshell is the only original part carried over.

The rest – some 6500 parts – were made recently by the Porsche Classic division, including its 444bhp twin-turbo 3.6-litre flat six engine, four-wheel drive system and gearbox.

Finished in gold paint, the car pays homage to the far more recent 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series. A black and gold theme runs throughout the car, with black upholstery and gold stitching, and black wheels with gold accents. The process started with corrosion-proofing and painting the bodyshell, before the rest of the car was assembled meticulously around it.

With an identical engine to the original 993 Turbo S’s, Project Gold has identical performance figures, with a 0-100kph time of 3.7sec. The car’s chassis number is one on from that of the last 993 Turbo, which was produced in 1998. Only 345 Turbo Ss were originally produced, making Project Gold number 346. It also has a '1 of 1' plaque announcing its one-off status on the interior.

It’ll be sold at auction by RM Sotheby’s in October.

BMW 9-series coupe could soon be reality

A BMW 9-series coupé could soon be on the cards as part of the brand’s push into the high-end luxury market. Company design boss Adrian van Hooydonk has hinted towards a four-door coupé to rival the Mercedes-Maybach S 600.

The German marque recently launched a new 8-series to take on the Porsche 911 and Mercedes S-class, as part of plans to move the top end of its range further into the premium market. That strategy is likely to include a number of new models, which could include a 9-series.

When asked whether BMW had plans for a 9-series, van Hooydonk said: “Let’s say this: we won’t stop here [with the 8 Series]. Obviously, our job is to have more ideas than the company can build, because the other way round would be very bad.”

BMW has been evaluating the launch of a range of upmarket cars for years, and has recently introduced a new design language to appeal to a high-end audience. The recently launched 8-series coupé is the first model to carry that name since the original went out of production in 1999, and is set to be followed by a four-door coupé version late next year.

The 8-series shares platform elements with the 7-series sedan, and such architecture would likely underpin a future 9-series, which would also share engines with those cars. The 8-series range includes a 530.2hp, 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine in the M850i, and a 3.0-litre, inline, six-cylinder diesel producing 320.4hp in the 840d. A mild-hybrid version is understood to be on the way.

A large four-door coupé would likely prove particularly popular with high-end buyers in China, while a 9-series would also tie in with the potential expansion of BMW’s SUV and electric i ranges.

Van Hooydonk also said that the growth of the i brand has given BMW the freedom to push into the premium market: “The i brand has created a lot of opportunities for us, both in the acceptance of new technologies, and also in the acceptance of new design. [In terms of design], a car like the i8 opened doors to us we didn’t even know were there.”

The 5 Best 7 Seater Cars in India

The 5 Best 7 Seater Cars in India

In a country which prides itself upon in it’s traditional culture & values, India has been a land of big families. There were times when families had ten members easy, and there was no family car that was capable of supporting 10 bottoms. However, our well known penchant for ‘jugaad’ enabled us to make do, with our close knitted families getting those backsides ‘adjusted’ into them cars.
However, with the years we have realized the virtue of modesty in the bedroom as well, and families have been limited to maximum 6 or 7 members with usually, only a couple of children in each household. But, the crux of the matter remains that no hatchback or sedan is capable of adjusting 7 people. Automakers realizing that have been building Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPV) to satiate the need of an all purpose family car. The market is flooded with MPVs now, a segment which till a decade ago, only had a handful of names.
Customers have a whole platter of options to choose from now. Cars are available under all range of budgets now, with MPV’s like the Datsun Go Plus starting from 3.8 lacks & going upto 16.7 lacks with the top variant of the Toyota Innova Crysta. We have taken it upon ourselves to enlighten you regarding the best 7 seater cars in India & have compiled a list of the 5 best 7 seater family cars out there.

1. Toyota Innova – 8.5/10

The Toyota Innova has been the champion of the MPV segment since more than 10 years. It has the most space in it’s class & comes equipped with a powerful engine. The Toyota Innova is like a  plush, comfortable 7 seater couch which you can readily take out on short & long drives alike.
Innova - 5 Best 7 Seater Cars in India | Spinny Drive
Innova is First on the list of the Best 7 Seater Cars in India & has been the champion of the segment since more than a decade.

The original Innova was powered by a 2.5 litre hulk of an engine which churned out 101 bhp of power & 200 Nm of torque. Mated to a 5-speed gearbox with smooth shifts, the engine however did raise a ruckus at higher RPMs. Despite it’s sheer size & bulk, the Innova isn’t susceptible to too much body roll or vertical pitch. It has three rows of air conditioner vents to ensure that the third row of passengers survive the summer heat in breezy comfort.
Despite getting numerous face lifts since it’s inception, none of which were fundamentally very different from the first, Toyota has finally opted for an all out renovation with the Innova Crysta. Phasing out the original Innova, the new Crysta comes in 2 diesel variants (2.4 L – 148 bhp, 343 Nm & 2.8 L – 172 bhp, 360 Nm) along with a petrol variant (2.7 L- 164 bhp, 245 Nm) about to hit the market too. You can read more about it here.

2. Renault Lodgy – 8/10

Lodgy - 5 Best 7 Seater Cars in India | Spinny Drive
The Renault Lodgy is No. 2 on the list of the Top 7 Seater Cars in India.

The Renault Lodgy has the stereotypical boxy look of an MPV. That being said, the Lodgy isn’t bad to look at it with it’s chrome grille and those angular feline headlamps. Unlike it’s compact competitors Mobilia & Ertiga, it really offers the third seat passengers with the luxury of true space. It is shorter in length than our forerunner Innova, but has a longer wheelbase & is second on our list of the best 7 seater cars.
The Lodgy is powered by the 1.5 litre diesel engine as already seen in the Duster. It has been tuned to be offered in 2 variants – 84 bhp & 108 bhp mated to a 5-speed & 6-speed manual transmission respectively. It is a great driving experience with the turbo kicking in at 1500 RPM & seeing the car happily speed into three digits. Be careful though, the car does have a tendency to display body roll while cornering at high speeds. It not only shares its engine with the Duster, but has a similar touchscreen multimedia system too along with a reversing camera.

3. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga – 7/10

Ertiga looks like the car which the Ritz can see & exclaim “Mamaji”. Based on an extended Swift platform, Maruti would love to call Ertiga it’s first tryst with MPVs. Probably, Maruti’s first people mover which does not look like a kidnapper’s wet dream, Maruti has come a long way in terms of designing from the likes of Versa & Omni to Ertiga to feature in the list of best 7 seater cars.

Ertiga - 5 Best 7 Seater Cars in India | Spinny Drive
Coming in at No. 3 in the list of the Best 7 Seaters is the Maruti branded Ertiga.

It comes in 2 power options – a 1.4 litre petrol (94 bhp, 130 Nm) & a 1.3 litre diesel (89 bhp, 200 Nm) engine. The petrol variant is smoother of the two, but the diesel is efficient enough & once you factor in fuel economy, the diesel seems equally suitable, if not better. The first car on the list to sport a light-weight monocoque chassis, it has a very car like driveability and negligible body roll. The A-pillar might take some getting used to, considering how it obstructs the view every now & then.
A good looking MPV, which after making sliding adjustments to the middle row leaves acceptable amount of space for the passengers seated in the third row. Add to it the India friendly tag of Maruti & you will have the reason behind the competition’s nervousness.
It has quite a lot of the features found in the Swift. Worth mentioning is the miserly boot space of 185 litres after all the three rows have been deployed. The beige interiors which do look good need some maintenance to look squeaky clean.

4. Honda BR-V – 6.5/10

Heralding Honda’s entry into the list of the Best 7 Seater Cars in India, we have the BR-V coming in at No. 4.

Honda’s retort to the dismal response received by Mobilio, the BR-V is actually a compact SUV based on the same platform as it’s siblings – Brio, Amaze & Mobilio. But since it’s a typical budget 7 seater, we have included it on our list of the best 7 seater cars. The BR-V stands for ‘Bold Runabout Vehicle’.
It is the longest car in it’s segment to account for the third row of seats, which does make it rear end stand out a bit in a MPVish manner. It isn’t as high either, another factor which along with the narrow tyres & it’s Mobilio like look all serve to make it look like a MPV in a SUV’s clothing. The saving grace is the squared out front of the vehicle with the tall & straight bonnet, angular headlamps & a healthy quilting of chrome. The roof rails & plastic cladding also give it a sporty look. The rear end deserves a mention yet again with the wrapped taillights being joined by a thin layer of plastic.
It is powered by the same 2 typical Honda engines – a 1.5 litre i-DTEC diesel (100 bhp, 200 Nm) & a 1.5 litre i-VTEC petrol (118 bhp, 145 Nm). The automatic CVT transmission comes with only the petrol variant. The diesel engine is however, more refined and quieter in action than the ones seen before. The new smooth-shifting six-speed manual transmission is a great new addition that readily improves drivability.
The interiors are quite bland and simple with a black monotone.  The absence of a touchscreen infotainment further adds to a customer’s woes. All being said, the BR-V is still the only car in it’s class to come equipped with 7 seats, quite a temptation for buyers looking for a 7 seater family car.

5. Mahindra Xylo – 6/10

Mahindra is well known for it’s powerful diesel engines which have powered many a powerful beast like the Scorpio & XUV500. Having such a tried & tested, reliable drive train along with those comfortable plushy seats only adds to the Xylo’s appeal which is the 5th & last car to feature on our best 7 seater cars list. It comes powered by two diesel engines – a 2.2-litre mDI CRDe engine (94 bhp, 218 NM) & a 2.5-litre mHawk engine (118 bhp, 280 Nm).
The Last Car to have made the Cut, Xylo is No. 5 on our list of the Best 7 Seater Cars

Though a high cabin does make for a sturdy look, paired with a soft suspension, it makes for a ride full of swerves & lurches. Further, the Xylo had problems with body roll. However, the new model of the Xylo saw the company addressing the problems with a stiffer suspension and work on the anti-roll bars. The car now boasts of a much fluid drive, though the slightly hard steering could still do with some work.
The interiors which originally came in just the homely beige color, were upgraded to the beige-black dual tone in the 2015 face lift to make for a more luxurious finish. The USP of the vehicle is undoubtedly the spacious third row. The top variant comes equipped with voice commands, steering-mounted controls and a range of other features.

It wasn’t by any means an easy job to decide the list of the Best 7 Seater Cars in India, and we had many close competitors.
List of cars that didn’t make the cut :-
  • Nissan Evalia
This people mover by Nissan is a good comfortable drive, especially when driven within it’s limits. At higher speeds, however there is body roll & the ride quality isn’t really too good with each bump making it’s way into the cabin.
  • Chevrolet Enjoy
Chevrolet’s venture into the people moving business, the Enjoy boasts of ample room and comfort. The car is stylish enough for an MPV & even offers reasonably good driveability. It’s a bit low on pick up though with the car making the 0-100 kph dash in a laidback 19.75 seconds.
  •  Datsun Go Plus
Datsun’s ambitious experiment with MPV’s, this sub-compact MPV is the cheapest 7 seater our there. It comes equipped with smart features like follow me home headlamps, intelligent wiper system & the works. It is a pretty decent drive too & does not lack for power in city conditions.
  • Ashok Leyland Stile
The venerable automaker who has earned quite a reputation for itself in the heavy automobile market & is trying it’s hand in the passenger vehicle business now with the Stile. Stile’s a car which lacks for a lot in terms of features like ABS & even a music system. With acceptable driving performance & comfort, the Stile is suitable for the simple purpose of ferrying people.
