Volvo XC40 Momentum, Inscription launched

When Volvo opened bookings for its highly-awaited small SUV, the XC40, at the end of May, it said that the first lot of 200 cars were expected to be sold out even before the launch. That didn't happen as soon as Volvo initially thought it would, but two weeks on from the launch, all 200 examples of the XC40 R-Design have been booked. As a result, the R-Design is now pricier, and Volvo has added two more variants to the XC40 line-up – Momentum and Inscription.

In the mid-level R-Design and range-topping Inscription trims, the XC40's feature list includes 18-inch alloy wheels, wireless mobile phone charging, a 750-watt, 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, Volvo's 9.0-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a powered tailgate, and heated front and rear seats. As for the base Momentum trim, with the exception of 18-inch alloys (in a different design) and the infotainment system, it misses out on all the above mentioned features. It also gets standard cruise control, instead of the R-Design's adaptive cruise control.

In addition to the all that's on offer with the R-Design, the Inscription variant also gets a different design and finish for the grille, six-spoke, diamond-cut alloy wheels, subtle chrome elements for the exterior, driftwood inlays for the interior, electrically-foldable rear-seat headrests, a crystal gear knob and a charging point in the boot.

All variants get the same level of safety equipment; so the XC40 comes with lane-keeping assist, blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control, pilot assist, emergency braking, ESP, traction control, hill-descent control and eight airbags as standard.

The only powertrain on offer with the XC40 is the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel (D4) engine, which sends 190hp and 400Nm of torque to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The XC40 Momentum is priced at Rs 39.9 lakh, the R-Design (launched at an introductory price of Rs 39.9 lakh) now costs Rs 42.9 lakh and the top-of-the-line Inscription variant is priced at Rs 43.9 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). Bookings are already underway for both Momentum and Inscription variants, with the booking amount being set at Rs 2 lakh and deliveries expected to begin toward the end of August.
