Maruti Suzuki has announced that it has produced over 20 million (2 crore) units of its cars in India. The first carmaker to achieve this milestone in the country, it took Maruti Suzuki 34 years and 6 months to hit this number; the brand has been making cars in India since December 1983.
The brand currently has two manufacturing facilities in the country – in Gurugram and in Manesar – that produce 16 models for our market, and export a number of them to over a 100 countries around the globe. Out of the 20 million units produced, 14.37 million (71.85 percent) were made at Gurugram while 5.62 million (28.15 percent) rolled out of the Manesar plant.
The 1 million units produced milestone was achieved by Maruti Suzuki in March 1994 (11 years 3 months), the 5 million mark in April 2005 (22 years 4 months), the 10 millionth unit rolled out in March 2011 (29 years 3 months), while the 15 million mark was hit in May 2015 (32 years five months).
In FY2018, the company produced a total of 17,68,488 (11.78 percent growth) units, out of which it sold a record 16,43,467 units in the domestic market and exported 1,23,903 units. Maruti Suzuki has announced its ambitious target of selling 2.5 million units by 2022-23. For the April-June 2018 period, the company produced a total of 4,74,970 units and sold 4,58,967 units in the domestic market, while it has exported 25,724 units.
The Japanese brand will shortly launch the facelift for its Ciaz mid-size sedan after which, it will bring the second-gen Ertiga to India. Both models will be powered by a new 104hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine, which replaces the previously available 92hp, 1.4-litre petrol motor.
